Been shooting a Crosman 2100 Classic for a few months now and am looking to upgrade to either Crosman Quest 1000X http://www.pyramydair.com/p/crosman-quest-1000x-kit.shtml or Ruger Air Hawk Combo http://www.pyramydair.com/p/ruger-air-hawk-air-rifle.shtml. From reviews and web searches, they seem about the same so would appreciate anyone's input as to which they prefer.
From my research, both: break barrel springers; Chinese made; 1000 fps; .177 pellets; hardwood stocks, 4x32 economy scopes, fiber optic sights on front, adjustable rear. And they both cost about the same.
Only differences appear to be in appearance and customer service. Ruger's stock a bit darker and better barrel bluing. BUT, customer service for Crosman, from what I gather, is superior to Ruger's (UMAREX, actually). Also parts availability is apparently better for Crosman. |

| You should go to a store where they will let you hold them I tried holding the Ruger and the Quest 1000 and the Storm XT. What I found was for me the Ruger was not comfortable in length but the quest 1000 and storm xt felt the same and fit me better. |

The ruger is a clone of the Diana 34. Rumor has it the Ruger isn't that bad, although not acutally made by Ruger, so I don't think I could do that.
All the other members should be able to know which rifle I recommend... the Diana 34. If you don't want to get the 34, then get the Quest. Quest and 34 come in .177 and .22, AFAIK the Ruger only comes in .177.
Dianas are supposed to have a lifetime warranty, and the Quest is backed by Crosman.
Assuming the Ruger does have the TO5 trigger clone, it shouldn't be too hard to tune. Hell, I figured out the TO5 without any kind of manual. |

Pretty intriguing suggestion for the Diana 34, Fritz. Thanks. The rifle's positives outweighed the negatives in the reviews I read about it. And the 34 (or Ruger) is the more attractive of two, but the 34's price makes it more of an investment than the expense that the Quest would be. Of coarse, investment in the 34 would be better in the long run since the 34's durability will likely be greater.
Slavia's suggestion for the GRT III trigger upgrade, apparently not available for RWS rifles (according to http://www.charliedatuna.com/GRT-III%20Trigger%20New.htm#grtiiiguns, pretty much determines that the Quest's value is probably greater overall.
BTW, also good advice was Frank Zappa's warning to not eat yellow snow. |

Am I misreading or are you saying that with that tune part it would be better then a Diana based clone? |

Guess I'm thinking that a clone's components would likely be inferior to the real article's. That is, although the Ruger appears like the Diana, it's mechanical quality is probably nowhere near it, whereas the Quest is the real article.
I'm just using plain logic here, not actual air gun expertise like you guys have offered. |

| I have a storm, which is a direct copy of the phantom and quest. THey all have the same innards, just different stocks and scopes. I was really surprised by this. THe quest is just the same rifle with a nicer finish on the stock and a nicer scope. Even the quest 800 which is the same innards with a 22 barrel on it. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these rifles, but it kind of is fun to have a lego gun. lol I can customize anything with direct crosman parts. I am getting ready to convert my storm xt to a 22 barrel and block. |

Was intrigued with the Storm too since it appears to be a Quest at around the same price but with a different appearance (lighter stock, etc).
Now with the Ruger v. Diana, don't see how they could be comparable except for appearance considering the huge price difference between the two. Has to be component-related and guts are ultimately what's important.
Of coarse the guts of the Diana are likely superior to the Quest's and if both cost the same, would buy the Diana but can't see shelling-out an additional $100+.
BTW, did I ever say that I'm glad I joined this forum? It's been an education. |

The ruger is a CLONE, made in China, the Diana is made in Germany. <- IIRC they have been in business before Henry Ford. With hope the Quest is made in USA, but China is to be expected.
Neither would be anywhere as good as the Diana, and neither would last as long. Neither are backed by a lifetime warranty, but the Diana is. The Diana does not need to be tuned out of the box. If you get a TO5 model, the trigger is OK out of the box, and is adjustable to an extent. Neither of the competition can be adjusted nor expected to perform, although the Quest can be upgraded.
I'm not trying to be a salesman here, but the extra $100 is definitely worth it. Doesn't a good tune cost $100 anyway?
I still tuned my Diana, on my own. Cost about $70 for spring, seal, and lubes from JM. Did trigger work on my own. Too bad for 'ole Frank I learned not to eat yellow snow before I knew he existed. |

Damn, Fritz. You make good arguments in favor of the Diana. In the long run, this will be the better choice.
But in the short run, my local Gander Mountain will sell me a Quest 1000X for 100 plus sales tax (5%). Don't you think this is too good to pass up? |

So it seems like you're back to where you were at the beginning, perhaps with the third option of buying a more expensive Diana. In the end it might come down to donec's suggestion to check "fit," and after that maybe your reaction to style and finish. |

I think if it had to be the Quest or the Ruger, definitely the Quest.
After a break in and JM spring, my Super Streak is quite a shooter. I'll assume that the Quest would be the same coming from Crosman.
As Slavia pointed out, Donec does have a good point about shoot-ability. If the gun doesn't fit you, it won't be a pleasure, if at all possible to shoot accurately. |

So the Diana and the Quest remain.
The Diana comes with a better scope (AO), offers a more pleasing appearance, and isn't Chinese-manufactured. I don't foresee shooting a lot but in the long run, although the it cost over $100 more, the Diana could also turn out costing less overall due to better build and therefore fewer breakdowns.
The Quest is at a better price point, has decent build, offers equal power and accuracy and Crosman's customer service.
I suppose this choice mirrors buying either a Honda Accord (although Japanese) or a BMW. |
