Is there a minimum pellet speed for a quick kill on rabbits and squirrels?
My gamo Whisper brags about 1000fps. What it actually shoots is anybody's guess. What would be the lowest speed you would hunt with for .177 and .22 pellets?

that would really depend on the range, at 10 yards in .22 i wouldnt think twice about rabbit and squirrel i would take out to 15 yardds with an honest 500 fps

30 yards id say with standard weight pellets to be safe id say 600+ in .22 for rabbit and 750 in .177 for rabbit, take 50-100 fps off for squirrel

well here is some info taken in an experiment for the fps at point of inpact with a standard .177 pellet

squirrel----365fps
rabbit-----500fps
using the same source for retaining velositys with flat pellets(if you want balistics of pointed and round ask)

@ 100 ' (a little over 30 yards[33]) you need a gun shooting oabout 750fps to get 500fps at point of impact
@ 100' you need a gun shooting 600fps fpr a 100' velosity of 420fps so even about 550, initialy would work

for a .22 if you had a gun shooting the same velosity would be MY suggestion of required velosity

I've taken rabbits out to 85 yards with 21.9 grn
kodiaks. They work great if I keep them around
900-960 fps. Much higher and accuracy starts
to suffer. Much lower and they start to lose shock
value. On high they go 1178 fps and are only
accurate out to 7 yards and are extremely
loud even with a 67 cubic inch moderator.

That is likely true- and you raised a good point- but I believe the original question was probably oriented more at what initial (i.e. straight out of the muzzle) velocity the pellet should be traveling for specific animals at specific ranges.

I appreciate all the replies. Ya know, I think I'm going to junk this Gamo
whisper. I had it shooting good for about a week. I started to think it was settling down but I did some shooting today at my target box at around 30 Yard and Pellets were ALL OVER!!! About 4" apart at the farthest 2 pellets.
3 or 4 days ago I put 4 shots thru bullseye, less than 1/2 inch, and I started to think this gun was gonna be ok. It sat in it's rest for a couple days and its way off. This is the second scope I've had on it. I think I will just buy a more accurate rifle and start over. Something around 600-800fps. Any suggestions under $250.
Kenny

P.S Is .177 more or less accurate than .22??

As for a new, reasonably economical gun- the Diana 34 Panther and the RWS/Hammerli/Umarex AirMagnum 850 are both good choices in your pricerange- just depends on whether or not you want a springer or a Co2 gun.

How about a BAM B26? 680-700 fps.
You can get one with a scope and rings to your door for under $200.
