I came across this on the net, and immediately thought of all you Americans and Canadians shooting in your cellars and trying to keep the sound down. Well this is the answer to your prayers.
All you need is a few car tyres and an old pallet. In fact if you put it on the back of a truck, it would be portable.
Have fun Al
PS:
I see some of you guys have been busy allready.

Mr. Funny- always poking at those of us unable to get a silencer legitimately on the other side of the water.
Has anyone actually built one of these absurdities to try it out? |

I was being serious, have a look at:
Funky Silencer
If someone can translate the site it may prove a genuine project.
But you've got to admit it does make you smile.

Several things wrong here. Why do you need a silencer for an airgun? Are they really that loud? And, what about the gigantic hole in the middle of the tires? I'm thinking a lot of sound waves will still escape through there.
I picture a couple guys whipping up that drawing in photoshop in like five minutes and sticking it on their site. And then chuckling to each other saying "How many idiots do you think we can get to try to make a silencer out of tires? hahaha"
But seriously, It would probably cut down on the omnidirectional sound emission, but I bet if you were down range of the rifle it would still be quite loud. |

A lot of air rifles are noizy, but this is more common with PCP's CO2 rifles.
If your spring powered airgun makes a bang, that's diesel, or the bullet going trough the sound barrier.
Some people find the sound of their rifle annoying. I enjoy a good thwock. |

Well you have answered your own question there Roger, "why do you need a silencer on an airgun", for the simple reason to cut down sound, springers are not to bad, although my TX has a crack like a .22 rim fire, PCP and Co2 are even worse and if you go hunting the last thing you want is a noisy gun. Another couple of reasons is that you do not upset the neighbours and you protect your ears from damage.
As for whether it would work, I made something similer using a roll of foam rubber six feet long with a 3" hole down the middle, and it worked well for shooting in the loft. I think if the tyre size is reduced to a 6" bore it may well work, I know from this site that there are a lot of people looking for something to reduce airgun noise, so they can shoot in there basements, and I think something like this may be the answer, so don't knock it unless you have tried it.

| Yeah, just decrease the size of the opening in the middle with panels of some sort. Obviously you would have to leave it big enough to see through still. |

Why not take a piece of PVC pipe, 2 inch ID, then cut yourself a 24 pieces
of 1/4 ply donut shaped to fit inside. Separation buy ply spacers.

To answer your question...this is why not:
| Quote: |
FORMER INDIANAPOLIS MAN CHARGED WITH ESCAPE FROM A FEDERAL PRISON CAMP AND MULTIPLE FIREARM OFFENSES
Susan W. Brooks, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced that BRENT E. MERRITT, 55, formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana, most recently and currently an inmate of the United States Bureau of Prisons, was indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Indianapolis for escape and various firearm offenses, including carrying a firearm during and in relation to his escape, possession of 18 firearms and approximately 2400 rounds of ammunitionas a convicted felon, and possession of specific firearms (a machine gun, a silencer, and a bolt designed to convert an semi-automatic Uzi pistol into a machine gun) that were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, following an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the United States Marshals Service, and the United States Bureau of Prisons.
The indictment alleges that MERRITT, was convicted in 1978 of the felony of possession of a silencer and was convicted in 2002 of possession of a firearm by a felon. |
You don't want to mess around with silencers just because you want to feel like a cowboy, because they can set into motion a chain of events that make you end up in prison for the rest of your life.
And, we're only talking about airguns here. If you are concerned about noise, get a Gamo Whisper. |

i dont notice my co2 guns are that loud but they are for sure louder than my springers and Pneumatics but they are louder the shorter you barrel is ( i dont know why just yet)
i have a 2 2240s 1 had a 7" barrel it was loud the other had a 14" it was not as loud then i cut the 7inch to 5.5" and now it roars! still nothing compaired to a rimfire though
doesnt mater how loud it is because people hunt with firearms all the time even though they are loud. |

The thing is that we have different laws each side of the pond, over that side basically all silencers are banned, so that’s the end of any argument about having one, but I can't see how you could get the law on you for shooting through a tyre rack, it isn't a silencer and it's not fastened to the gun, if you got put in jail for that then they could call a basement a silencer and lock everyone up.
Over this side no one hunts without a silencer, the advantage is that you can sit in your hide and pick off rabbits, birds or rats, without everything else being scared off by the noise.
Just one comment on the silencer ban in the USA is that maybe the government as got it right, what with all the campus shooting we hear about, just imagine what damage the same person could do with a silenced rifle, the strange thing is that over here there as been two massacres in recent years, which led to the banning of all handguns classed as firearms and stricter laws governing airguns, but in both cases no silencers were used.

Incidentally, an acquaintence told me his father just got a silencer permit, which is apparently rather costly. Of course, silencers are costly too and it's better to know someone who makes them and get a custom silencer from them, which I believe this guy is doing.
I always wondered why there aren't any silencer related killings, since we see so many silenced weapons used in movies and it seems like such an effective and stealthy way to assissinate. But they are hard to come by.
But I do think silencers would be excellent for hunters for obvious reasons. Silent death from a concealed distant location is about as good as it gets.
Firing with my airgun from indoors on a very windy day once, I was able to shoot five birds in a row which were standing right next to each other. And I was only 8 yards away! I think the wind was blowing directly into their ear holes and caused them to not really hear the gun shots. That was sort of like a simulated silencer experience. It was cool being able to just fire, reload, and fire, like I wasn't even there. |
