Now I am seasoning the R1. During the first 50 shots I have noticed that it will rekease the piston and the pellet will not move. When I open up the rifle I can hear the compression bleed off. So I blamed it on the Gamo pellets. But after switching brands and types, it is now happening avery other shot. So if I push the pellet into the rifling a bit it will work.
You guys ever see this?[/i]

When I got home I cleaned the bore again. And tested the pellet/rifle combination. Same problem. So I suspected the issue was in the bore rather than the powerplant.
My next test was to measure pellet heads and skirt diameters. I found .175 to .180 heads and skirts. I have some Daisy Quick silver pellets that even though the heads were reasonable, every skirt measured .190.
Here is the real interesting thing. These pellets were giving the R1 fits where the marksman 0035 was able to shoot them all.
Today's testing revealed alot of vertical stringing. Even though my testing distance was only 10 yards, it was not uncommon to see a 2-3 inch vertical difference in consecutive shots. I even saw 6" differences!
I am chalking this up to the differences in pellet/bore fit. Loose fit is low velocity. Perfect fit highest velocity. Tight fit is low velocity. Now if these fits were all random in the same tin, you would get vertical stringing due to velocity fluctuation.
What are your experiences with this?

The first thing I will suggest, is to inspect the leade in the barrel. If there is a ridge at the start of the rifling, each pellet will take a different pressure to start moving. Second check is the breech seal and lock-up.

have you tried the tissue test yet? lay a piece of tissue paper over the area where the breech meets the barrel n shoot it. if the paper moves there lays your trouble

More testing today. About 300 pellets. Things I learned were the R1 will jar itself apart it left to its own demise. And I mean everything. So the vertical stringing continued. Eventually I broke out the P1 pistol and chronoed it. 560's! At this time I ran the same pellet thru the R1. Low 500's. Pure disgust!! So thinking the R1 will need to come apart again I had nothing to loose. So I applied some synthetic non flammable oil (4 drops) thru the transfer port. After working the piston back and forth I noticed an immediate difference. After 20 shots I noticed the breech stayed dry after each shot and the slight smoking stopped. Out came the chrono for a 958!. After a couple hundred more shots I was still seeing 955-965! These were run of the mill Crossman pointed hunting pellets from WalMart. And this is why the groups were not that good. Still a work in progress!

The seals are all brand new. As a matter of fact everytime the piston was unable to send the pellet out, the cylinder held the compression until I broke the barrel open. It sounded like opening a can of soda.
The lube ahead of the piston made all the difference in the world!!
