I picked up a Romanian Pioneer brake barrel cheap. I want to teach my grand kids basic firearm safety and shooting.
I'm new to these types of guns. Any tips on cleaning and servicing these. How do I strip it down?

Don't dry fire it, you will break the piston and spring. As far as cleaning goes you really don't need to clean them that often.

Do I need to lube any seals or the piston?

I think every so many shots you do. Don't use petroleum based lubes as that will cause your rifle to diesel.

Have you tested the rifle? It may have bad seals after potentially many years of sitting.

Lube the exterior joints with any oil you like, but the piston seal depends on what it's made of- leather, use regular oil, a modern urethane seal, a silicon oil (i.e. no petroleum distillates in it).

I have one of these - a couple of us on this forum do. It's a very cheaply made rifle. On the other hand, it's short, light, and has a low cocking force. Probably perfect for teaching your grandchildren. Once their skills start to outpace the Pioner you can consider something else. Performance is in the
BB gun category, so shoot at about 5 yards. Here's my thread on it from way back when:

It has a leather piston seal, which needs oil to stay pliable. A few drops down the transfer port will do it, assuming it's in shootable condition now. Otherwise, oil everything that slides or pivots, tighten the screws, and you're set.

yes use silicone oil. I put 5-6 drops in the chamber n work the barrel about half way a few times n let it set in a corner butt down for a day to get the oil soaked in. those are a fairly accurate rifle for cheep. I bought a dozen for like $10-12 @ fixed most of them up n gave them to some neighbor's kids for Christmas. the 1 I use is great at 10 yards

Thanks Robert W. I'll pick some up. The seal doesn't look like it's leather but I'll still get the silicone oil.

Silicone oil should work with either a synthetic or leather seal. It's a prettty low power gun, so dieseling and detonation shouldn't be a worry. Please post photos of the innards as well as the groups you get.

I'd like to see pics too, I was tempted to get one of the Pioneers a while back. I'd like to see what I missed out on.

Judging by my example "miss" is the operative word. I sincerely hope Old Trucker got a better one. It's just the right size for training youngsters.
