The spring is held at the back by a plug in the main tube. (That plug also has a rod that goes inside the spring as a guide.) The only two things that keep that plug from flying out backward are the cross pin and the screw for the trigger assembly. (That screw has a hexagonal head like a bolt, and the stock mounting screw goes into it.) If your nephew replaced the spring he probably either forgot to put the pin back, or lost it.
The spring is preloaded, so even uncocked it is "squished" and exerts force on the plug. When cocked that could be a couple (even several) hundred pounds of force. It's aimed at your face, and right now one single screw keeps it in place. Get the pin.
Also do a search for "spring compressor." When people disassemble/assemble spring guns they use a screw jack tool that eases the plug out, completely relaxing the spring. That prevents the thing from going "kaboing," potentially causing injury or lost parts. |

| i have already been looking at instructions to build a spring compressor, i actually knew what could happen shooting without the crosspen in place i just wasnt thinking about it, been out of airgunning a long time came back using pcps just now getting back to springers, thanks for all your help |

| If you decide you like the gun there are a couple of replacement triggers that will greatly improve it. About $40, Google GTR or GTX. |

| triggers is something i have already been looking at for both the crosman and benjamin, i got the crosspin in found a tension pin at the tractor store, chucked it up in my drill and polished it down to the perfect diameter then cut to length, few minutes after i finished my nephew showed up with the factory pin lol, my friends grandson says he has what he thinks is a old beeman, has no power but its mine if i want, i scrimped and saved to get me a decent springer (benjamin genisis) a couple weeks later i have 2, and now waiting on my 3rd to show up, gonna have to build me a rack if they keep accumilating |

Yup. It's addictive. I would be reluctant to mess up a brand new gun that came dear, but now that you have a couple of freebies you're in the perfect position to try a project gun. Post photos if you do! |

I made a nice spring compressor out of some angle and a c-clamp cut in half. I'll see if I have a pic on my new computer of it.
EDIT: Itdidn't make it on the computer. I'll look thru the DVD I burnedof pics. THismay take a while. lol |
