How do they do it? Seems like new and higher power LED flashlights just keeps on coming out. 300 Lumens or more out of a single LED?
I bought a few last year in the 80-120 lumen range and thought they were very bright and unbelievable for the amount of service time for a set of batteries. I haven't changed the batteries yet on a couple of them. For instance, my Nuflare Rebel 90, 100 lumen, 6W, 1 AA, flashlight has given me far more than the rated 1 hour battery life that was expected. I use it for up to 10 minutes at a time and must have gotten more than 3 hours out of the single battery (an Energizer).
Are these high output LEDs operating continously or in some kind of pulsed mode? There is a tiny circuit board that the LED is mounted on and what little technical info that is given only says it is a voltage converter.

LED Flashlight are made up of LED (light-emitting diode)

and LED are said to be as is a semiconductor light source. and the main purpose of this is for lighting..

usually it is composed of visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, that causes it's very high brightness.

I believe the main benefit to LED lights over traditional filament lights is that the LED does not produce very much waste heat. With traditional bulbs, you are putting an electric current through a filament that heats up until it glows white hot. Since heat and energy are technically the same, you are wasting a lot of energy in the form of heat radiating off the bulb. LED lights produce very little heat (any electronic device will create at least a small amount of heat from electrical resistance) and therefore have a lower power requirement.

The Wikipedia Page for LEDs has more detailed information if you are interested or bored.

I understand the principle of an LED, I graduated as an electronic engineer many years ago. But I am still astonished by these new developments in LED technology. These new high intensity LED flashlights do generate heat, after a few minutes of use, you can feel how warm it is. Now to think that the microscopic junction on that chip from which the light is being emitted from is using/giving off wattages of power, and the chip can last so long without destroying itself. It's a wonder.

Led's require a constant set voltage and below that voltage they don't light and to much above it and they burn out, so a voltage regulator is fitted to control this.

LED lighting has changed the way we light our homes and work. Each year, more and more people are saving energy by switching to power efficient LED’s. The lower monthly electric bills soon pay for the greater initial cost of LED lighting, and add up to real savings.

Until the LEDs fail, that is.... Like the previous CFLs, their claimed lifespan is a JOKE.... I can't tell you how many sets of "lifetime LED" Christmas light strings I've had quit during the first season of operation.... I bought them not only for the low electrical consumption, but for their supposedly long life because they are in a difficult to access location....

Yeah, so much for that idea.... Rolling Eyes .... Spend more money because they "last forever" and then spend it again every year?.... Pretty hard to make back the exhorbitant initial costs if their claims of 20-25 year life are a JOKE !!! .... It will be a Frosty Friday before I take a chance on a $30 replacement for a 60W lightbulb that only uses 6W.... and then have it fail in a year or so....

LEDs in Christmas lights - Garbage

LED in my Streamlight? (Trademark, that is :P) Just as good as when I bought it. I thought it was dimming this year, and then I replaced the battery.

Good as new.

Candles, Mr. Addison, old fashion candles... errr and yes it could be used to accidentally eliminate your home.. Just kidding... If you are handy with electrical stuff, maybe a solar panel-battery system powering LED bulbs.

If you need to light up dark rooms during the day, there are skylight tubes that channel sunlight in from your roof. Free lighting. I have one going to my bathroom and it is lit up nice and bright like a 100 watt bulb in there.

It's all the regulator and the lack of wasted heat.

LED maglite: indestructible.

Dropped mine on the ramp this morning, basically smashed it edge of lens first into the concrete. I've dropped it so many times there's a connection going in it, but it lights up when I turn it on, and it's damn well bright.

I have a Led Lenser torch I bought for night shooting, it has a Cree led at 200 lumens and a 220m beam, What it is handy for is defending yourself from an attacker, the light output blinds them and a crack on the head with it subdues them. Laughing
