OK I just watched Bones "The Doom in the Gloom" on Hulu. They investigated some doomsday preppers for murder....
Now don't get me wrong here, I see nothing wrong with have some extra food and other supplies around and even a few guns. But how much "prepareness" is too much?
IMHO some preppers spend thier lives preparing for the "End of the Word" instead of living them. |

There's that "Doomsday Preppers" show that plays on National Geographic or Showtime or somesuch. For anyone not familiar with it, they do a profile on a "prepper" family or group or whatever and then "rate" their preparations and recommend improvements.
I don't claim to have any idea what most of these people are thinking. Hey- if I had a spare million dollars or two- maybe owning an old bomb shelter or missile silo would be kinda cool- but am I going to spend every penny I earn on such a thing and hundreds of hours a year keeping it up- just "in case" things go bad? Probably not. |

That would be money better spent on airguns that might be useful in a
doomsday food shortage IMO. |

From some stuff I read during the 80's and 90's about this subject, one of the things they warned about is letting other people know about you hoarding supplies in case of the end of the world happending. If it does happend you may end up shooting them. Or at least that's what the books claimed.

I'm afraid that the most common game that would be left... Would be people.... Other animals would be eaten up in a very short while. |

So it's best not to attract attention, like using firearms... |

| Maybe it's their hobby, just like our airguns? THey are just a little more crazy, um I mean intense about it. The payback is kind of depressing though. I mean just because you can say I told you so because the earth implodes is kind of I don't know, weird? I live almost dead center between indianapolis and Dayton and cincinatti, so I guess I am screwed no matter what. You know nuke is centered on all three of those. If it's just something like the economy or the government collapsing I recon I could go for a while at least till my meds run out. My fiancee is diabetic though, so she is pretty dependent on healthcare. She would suffer a lot. I wouldn't know what to do there. |

I'm in the same boat. I'm diabetic myself AND I take meds for depression as well. |

I think these most of these guys are hoarders by another name.
One thing that would keep me from buying scores of airguns or anything else for that matter is the lack of room I have at my current place. |

Does he hoard gold and silver too?

What did he do, ran out of space for his hoard? I heard that gun shops are having a hard time even keeping .22 LR in stock. |

This is where the argument gets interesting- for anyone who is not in peak physical and mental condition, in my view, survival through some sort of civilization-ending event would be a waste of time; a) you will be a burden on other survivors/group members (such as your family), b) you may not be fully functional- i.e. if you have a heart condition and therefore cannot lift logs, cut wood, dig holes, whatever- you better have a very definitive "skill" that works around the disability, c) you may end up dying far earlier than a healthy person- meaning your contribution may be very "time limited".
I'm not saying this to be funny- I have a condition that could, and almost has, killed me a couple times- if I were to "prep" and such an event were to occur, my "contribution" would be very time-limited and the best I could hope for would be to assist in the survival of my family/friends/group members at the start and then having to leave before croaking in order to not become a drain on the group. Fact is, anyone with a significant physical or mental impairment won't be all that valuable in a "society" scraping tree bark and possibly killing each other for eats. Sad, but true, unfortunately. For anyone with a physical or mental impairment, the last thing they should be worried about is an end-of-the-world event- it will kill them, sooner rather than later, guaranteed, and most likely will diminish the survival prospects of the group they are a member of in the process.
This is pure speculation- but I am betting that the common things these "prepper" types have is a general dislike and distrust of most people (therefore the world may very well come to an end based on the actions of others, in their view) and a hubris that they a) deserve and b) will, survive to spread around whatever they may believe they are superior at doing- i.e. shooting stuff, expounding views on politics, dictating to their family how they will live and so on. I really can't accept that thousands of people in the US alone are doing this sort of thing purely out of a "survival" instinct or as a "hobby" (unless they are idly rich)- they need to plan it, lay out a program for it, then implement it- not something a cornered animal with a "survival" instinct does when there is no real, definitive threat in front of them and not something anyone who hasn't got alot of spare cash they don't know what to do with will work on. I suspect these people must be somewhat unbalanced to start with.
And that's probably where I've offended a few people lurking about around here I'm sure... |

You may have something there.

| Yeah, I'd be useless. I know how to do a lot of things alternate ways, old technology, etc which would be useful maybe, but also a bad back and borderline diabetic. Might as well paint a bomb target on the roof on my house. Not to be morbid, but I just don't care enough about surviving anything anymore. If it's bad enough that I need a hoard of guns and canned goods to get through it...I don't want to get through it. |
