OK reading up the QB78 air rifle at http://www.archerairguns.com I notice there's a lot of modifications I could to a QB78.

Two of them I'm thinking of doing if I do get a QB78 are the oversize bolt handle and the XP tune kit. How hard would it be to do these?

Also in general how hard is it to repair airguns?

In general repairing and modding airguns is just like anything else, bikes ,cars, electronics, metalworking. Its all about preparing a work area and having patience.

I don't have a qb78 it is on my list of future purchases. But bolt mods of any kind can only be done with tools at hand. A lathe is a huge help, if ya got real clever a drill press would do the job.

Above all become a sponge and soak it in :-)

I would have to get some tools. However I don't have the space for or the skill to use the machines you got(droooling).

BTW nice work on the bullpup 1077 mod you made.

Well if you can make yourself a nice bench, a drill press, vise and bench grinder you would be able to make a lot of stuff. Hell I have seen guy's make a closet into a shop and pack all of that into it.

But a bench is a must, ya need a area where you can take the gun apart and spread all its guts out on the bench. Ya know everything in my shop I bought used so no million dollar machines sitting in there. The milling machine and lathe are my two most expensive tools. The milling machine I made(would never suggest anyone do that, cost me more than if I would have bought one)

Thanx the bullpup was fun and its a shame its sitting in my gun bag not being fired(too cold)

I live in a rather small apartment with a roommate. Besides right now I don't the skills to make stuff anyway. At best I could just swap out parts.

When I first saw that, I thought you made the stock out of plastic.

I read a newspaper article the other day about a growing movement of cooperative workshops. You pay a reasonable membership fee and get a space to work, with access to power and hand tools. For each tool you have to take a class, so you get the skills (I'm sure it also helps with liability issues). There are two in the Mpls./St. Paul area, and others across the country. Unfortunately, they are both 90 miles from me, or I would be there every night playing lathe instead of falling off a bar stool. You might be luckier, who knows.

You could always find storage units that have power. I run my glass business out of 10 x 20 ft storage unit for $149 a month. And there are several guys there that have made man caves out of them.

But then again like Ern said just a throw a towel on the kitchen table.

And a lot a guys do crazy stuff with just a Dremel and some hand tools.

The main reason you want to have some tools is so you can mod parts that don't fit even when they are supposed too.

Hey let me tell you the internet has schooled me plenty. YouTube is a huge resource of info, join machinist forums, and any problem metal wise can be solved!!! I didn't start getting into tools and machining until I was 38, and as the internet grew more popular it got to be more educational. So alot to learn is on the net, just like now on this very thread ideas are being thrown at ya.

I bet the old time air gunsmiths wished they would have had the net when they first started. So don't be discouraged by space limits or lack of tools or knowledge, it will come if you so deem it so!!!

Aaah hell let me go grab another beer!!!!

I'll get that book then. When I get a QB78 I can start learning how to be an airsmith. The first MOD I'll do is the XP tune kit.

I have a nice, fully outfitted shop, but most of the time I grab the needed
tools and supplies from the shop and work at my coffee table in front of the
tube or computer in the living room.

Something that I was not allowed to do when married!
