Now I have a few candidates (crosman destroyers, crosman HP....), they get decent groups at decent ranges. But now I'm wondering which ones would work best at the velocities my humble 880 can put out, I'm speaking expansion wise. (Have a 10-20# skunk that likes my compost heap) What type of medium would be best to shoot into to test this? I've heard soap, wax, gelitan... but none from real reputable sources. I'm looking for something cheap and readily available. Any help wuld be greatly appreciated!   Posted: Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:33 pm Mark5043 Silver Status Member Joined: 12 Apr 2009 Posts: 1379 Though it's possible to kill a skunk with your 880,I personally wouldn't try it.A 10-20 pound skunk is going to require more FPE at the target for a humane kill,than your 880 is putting out..One shot one kill is what is humane,and unless that shot is absolutely perfect you'll have problems...big ones.You can bet that a pissed off,and injured skunk,is going to gas the area,not to mention suffer unreasonably.Your 880 is good for stuff up to squirrel size,at close ranges.If your going after skunks,I'd get a different air gun for that task.Something in the 15+ FPE range..."minimum"before I'd bother with issues of pellet expansion.Also,when that skunk releases...get ready to move quick.... _________________   Posted: Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:52 pm Myxr Member Joined: 02 Nov 2012 Posts: 22 Location: Middle TN Mark5043 wrote: Though it's possible to kill a skunk with your 880... Although I would like to kill the skunk, I realize that my 880 probably not up to the job. But with him effecting my livelihood (I grow button mushrooms as a side job), I am at wits end. I've tried everything on the www, with no luck. No money to buy new rifle, since he has been trashing (no pun intended) my compost beds (which are in enclosed spaces, I still have no idea how it gets in). Which brings another question, isn't there a castle doctrine? :: Being humane is the main reason why I would like to test it, before I just end up shooting him with my 22lr. A steel BB at 600 fps must penetrate the uncovered gelatin block to a depth between 3.25 and 3.75 inches. I use paper napkins soaked in water. I just leave them stacked and open the pack at the top and pour in the water until they are completely saturated and squeeze them down slightly, not much usually. I put the wet blocks of napkins in a cardboard box with the top and front cut out to shoot. My Daisy 901 puts out a BB pretty consistently at 6 pumps, to 600 fps so I use that. Looking at gunshots in vallistic gel and in forensic cases, this seems to do very well to imitate the ballistic gel. It's getting weird! (Try it, carefully, and with a back stop of course, it works! It doesn't cost much if you do it right. A few bucks worth of napkins will give you probably 6 shot tests of your favorite candidates if you spread them evenly. And I'm sure its a stink rat, the smell lingers for a while, and I see him running away when I go check te house after work. It has seemd to to me to work well so far for expansion/penetration testing. Do you know how far in a 600-ish fps BB goes so it can be softened or hardened with temperature if needed to simulate ballistic gell? I also want to try making some gel with Knox gelatin. I saw a recipe on line that looks worth trying.
