How many cars to you suppose it takes to make the 3 hour trip from Brookings, South Dakota to Waseca, Minnesota? The answer is four, but the 3 hour trip stretched out to be 7 hours.

Car #1 was our own van, which broke down. Car #2 was the brother-in-law's truck and trailer, which hauled Car #1 to the father-in-law's place. Car #3 was the one father-in-law lent to us so we could return home. Car #4 also belongs to the father-in-law (fortunately, he has several). #4 replaced #3, which whacked a deer after driving it one mile.

At my age adventures are over-rated.

Sounds like you need to get a dealers licence so you can grab a few car each week at the local auto auction to keep you and the family in automobiles!!! Hope your luck changes in short order...

As long as you have a string of relations scattered along the route, I can’t see that you have a problem. In fact you could probably get away with not owning a car, but don’t tell anyone. Laughing

We were lucky that there were no injuries. We were lucky that the deer only mashed the headlight (I bled off a lot of speed before the impact). Lucky that grandpa has several vehicles. Lucky that brother-in-law had a rig to haul it, was 30 minutes away, and was home for our call. Lucky that he says he can fix it. And, most important - lucky that the car broke down near a coffee shop. There's not much out there in the way of traveler accomodations...

You could have called me, I'm half an hour west of Brookings. Could have done some plinking and taken your mind off your troubles for a little while.

Those deer are thick out here, I moved to SD three years ago and I bet in those three years in the 10 mile stretch I drive to work I see a dozen dead deer a year. I've had 3 close calls but have been lucky so far.

This all happened on the MN side, but I'll keep it in mind the next time we go to visit the son at SDSU.

If I ever make it over your way I'll let you know, looks like you are due east of me on highway 14. My daughter goes to a doctor in Winnona so it could happen.

Yup, a straight shot on 14 and one block south. Just follow the trail of abandoned cars and dead deer.

If you are in Brookings on a Thursday night, head west on High way 14 for about 20 miles Look for the 1481 Bar/ Restaurant on the South side of the Hi way. All you can eat BBQ ribs for $10 Thumb Up! If you can't get there the Backyard Grill right next to McDonalds in Brookings has a good pulled pork sandwich.
