Just purchased a Baikal IZH-46M...I would like to put a scope on it...I plan to shoot no farther than about 50 feet distance...Red-dot or Low power scope?.Appreciate any suggestions...Thanks...

I use a Hawke red dot on a Crosman 2240 and it's good for 1" groupings at 50, the thing with a red dot is the dia of the dot so your never sure whether you are on the centre of the target, whereas a scope lets you pin point the bull.

Personally I prefer the red dot I find it quicker to acquire the target.

I agree with Alstone - I guess it really depends upon what kind of shooting you plan to do with it. I have red dots on both pistols and long arms, and I really like them - but not for all targets or conditions.

Since you focus on the target, you have the full normal field of view and target acquisition is fast. Aged eyes are happier because you only have to deal with one focal plane - and you can leave your glasses on.

What Alstone said about obscuring the target is true, although it can be somewhat mitigated with a brightness control - you turn down the brilliance of the dot until you can see the target through it. Of course that makes the dot harder to find, and sometimes in indoor low-light conditions it's even too bright on the lowest setting. Conversely, in direct, bright sunlight it may not be bright enough on the highest setting.

Lower-priced red dots have some parallax error (the dot moves as you move your head). This is more a problem with pistols and less with long guns, where the cheek weld to the stock reduces the problem. You just learn to keep the dot centered in the visible field of the scope.

Estimating holdover/under is harder with a dot than it is with a reticle, although some sights have reticle options in addition to the dots. Within the usable range of an airpistol you can also use dot diameters to estimate holdover. On the other hand, with a telescopic sight some magnification accompanies the reticle, which will also magnify all your twitching about.

I'm happy with my red dots - it all depends on how you will use it. Whichever way you go, be sure you have the correct mounting system (3/8" dovetail, Weaver, or Picatinny).
