I just got my quarterly copy of the Minnesota Hunter Education News and International Hunter Education Association Journal. I like this magazine because it's full of information that I can use, rather than the standard shooting magazine fare of product reviews. Anyway, there are a few items that you might find interesting:

1. The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League shot this year with 1500 kids in 57 teams representing 100 schools. 80 Additional schools have expressed interest for next year. Each team must have a certified firearms safety instructor as part of the coaching staff. (Minnesota Hunter Education News, Summer/Fall 2012, V. 34, p. 7)

2. There is a ton of stuff available for disabled shooters - follow this link (from Minnesota Hunter Education News, p. 12):

Following that link led me to this site:

3. This issue's oddball accident report ("Camp Ripley's Believe It Or Not") was with a pellet gun. Some kids were shooting at a steel fire pit ring, and you can guess what happened. The doctors had to leave the pellet buried in the kid's skull. Remember, guys - metal, rocks, or rubber can be bad news close up. (Minnesota Hunter Education News, p. 1)

4. This one is an advertisement from the IHEA Journal, Summer 2012, V. 12, No. 2, p. 10. It's a barrel guard, to keep mud, snow, rain, dirt, etc. out of your barrel. Am I mistaken, or have I seen these things before?

5. Finally, I know a number of you shoot with your kids. this link might be interesting (IHEA Journal p. 14):

That was an interesting read, I have not seen anything like that for the disabled shooter, I know a couple who shoot from wheelchairs but they have the use of their upper body.

I must admit I find the engineering solutions innovative and clever, I should think with the USA having a large consumer base it makes the marketing of equipment like this easier on a cost base, also I though the price of the equipment very reasonable.

As for safety I should think the shot gun shooters require a good set of brakes for the recoil.

Good Stuff!

Al

PS. just as an after thought regarding No 4, I seem to think for the D Day landings all soldiers were issued prophylactics for the same use. Smile

I recall hearing about our forces doing the same thing in Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, and Afghanistan.

While it is advertised in the IHEA Journal and instructors are given a discount, I would hesitate to distribute them to a class full of 12 year olds.
