Hey guys. I just wanted to share this with you all. Aline, my girlfriend, got this letter from the University here. Just some advance information: Aline has an average IELTS of 6.5 and her lowest score is 6.0. (IOW: 6.5 out of 10, or 65% out of 100%).
>Dear Aline,
>
> I checked your result and your overall score is 6.0 and not the required
> 6.0.
>
> This is the information that we send by email and is mentioned on the
> website.
>
> * test of proficiency in English**
> (TOEFL score 580 (paper based)/ 237 (computer based), 92 (ITB), British
> Council/IELTS test 6.5 or a Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English or
> of Proficiency in English (CAE/CPE); all sections of both TOEFL and
> IELTS have to be sufficient (TOEFL 55, 21 or 21/20; IELTS 6.0, including
> a TWE of 4.5 with the TOEFL test!!)
>
> • (academic) IELTS Academic (British Council’s English Language Test):
> score of at least 6.5, all sections sufficient (so at least 6.0 on each
> section);
>
> I'm really sorry this was unclear to you. I hope it's clear to you now.
> If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
>
> Kind regards,
>Removed name because you can get sued.
So what they're basically saying is that she has spend over a 1000 euros on tests, courses and extra lessons, flying back and forth between Europe and Mexico to get accepted into a University that can not specify how they want their 6.0.
I genuinely went: What. The. f#ck.
Just had to get it out there. |

The purpose of any college is to keep you there as long as possible and make as much money off you as possible, in order to pay the teams' coaches their millions. Colleges' vagueness on requirements is no accident. Get everything in writing.
cheers,

Maybe over there. Here that generally doesn't happen. If you don't show up for a month you're pretty much expelled unless you have a good explanation.
That hasn't really got anything to do with this basically. The University didn't make any money on her yet.
She didn't spend any money on that specific University as a matter of fact. They also don't have real ties with the mentioned test institutions. So their making money has nothing to do with it.
Edit: I think this has more to do with the fact that the specific faculty of (international) law is one where everyone has their head up their a$$. This really differs for every faculty, I've noticed. In Dutch language for foreigners they were way more easygoing. Yes, my girlfriend studied Dutch just so she can help herself out. That's commitment.
Technically there is nothing wrong with handling a school, college or a university as a business. But there is something wrong with running a business badly. Especially when you're doing it bad and retarded. |

My personal experience is all. (Although I must admit the professors and councellor have been helpful to me and waived some classes for me based on work experience.)
cheers,
Rob
PS, what's it like living somewhere where not everything is a racket for making money? |

I'm not familiar with this exam your girlfriend took, but isn't 60% kind of low in score? Most exams in the US require at least 70% to pass.
Maybe there were a lot of applicants, and they had to screen some out at their discretions. |

Dude- it's Mexico- anything/everything in Mexico can be had if you're willing lay out enough $$$.
That being said, I know when I ask "where do I want my international law expert to have been schooled" my first thought is "Mexico". No wait a minute, the only time I would say that is when I want a legal opinion on Mexican laws...
Seriously, that letter they sent is a bit contradictory; "I checked your result and your overall score is 6.0 and not the required 6.0."
??? Your score is not the required score? Someone having typing issues that day?
Anyone that confused does not inspire confidence in their educational credentials I might say.
Your girlfriend wants experience/training in International law? How about a European school, or maybe even somewhere in an "emerging market"- i.e. Brazil or such? I just don't see (and it might just be me) the value in a Mexican law degree outside of Mexico. |

Here's the Joke. The RUG (Rijks Universiteit Groningen) is where I live. In Groningen. That's what she applied for.
The IELTS test is very hard. I doubt that any of you will pass it with more then a 6. Seriously, I challenge you to get a higher score on the real deal. For a comparison, to get the Australian nationality you need a 5.0 to pass.
A bit of a roundup, this is actually what they want, and what they should have stated clearly on the website:
You need a 6.5 in at least two subjects. If your score is 6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 you are good to go. One 6.5 and three 6.0's does not make you a winner.
We're already kinda fed up with the faculty of law. Anyway, my beautiful lady is going to the Hanzehoge School, also in Groningen and about 10 minutes away from here. She changed her subject to International Communication, with possibly switching to International Law later. She got accepted because you only need a 5.5 in IELTS to enter. |

Then they should just give this as a reason, stating "I'm sorry, we're full." Also, she had asked, because of of some difficulties, if it was possible to send the results after the deadline of the 25th, and they were okay if she would send it befor the 3rd of Juli. So I doubt that's the case.
Here, there's no such thing as to many applicants. Universities are based on the fact that you do your studies yourself. Following a lecture is free. Even I could go and learn something there. But you have to be registered in the University for the grades. You also need books on the subjects that go with the subjects that are being tought in the lectures. Technically you could pass without ever visiting lectures, though this would be near impossible. The idea of the lectures is also to be able to interact with the scholars. |

That's like a police officer saying he's giving you a ticket because you were going 35 in a 35 m.p.h. zone. |

Bingo.
She could come to the US instead. You need not speak a word of English to get in and stay in.
You don't need any money or job prospects, either. |

I think Mexico was discovered by the Dutch back in 500 B.C., or something like that. Broom would know for sure. For a little country those guys sure got around. |

Provided you wanna live there. It's not easy to get residence in the US at all. A friend of mine wanted to live there but it took him 2 years before he got permision.

Long story short that's what it boils down to. Here she could do one test because they closed down a test center. There she could do 5. (IELTS and/or TOEFL).
It doesn't have much to do with the location, the exams/tests are the same format in every country.
Anyway, she go accepted in a different school that's closer to where she's gonna live. It's applied science instead of theoretical science. |

Given the fact that you're ticketed for going 35 in a 35, I'd definitely take that one to court.
That is, talk to whoever it is that sent that stupid email. Given that it's mexico, it's either a scam or they just want more money. |

This is not Mexico we're talking about. The tests are independent from other educational facilities.
This is not courtworthy. We ran out of time to apply and it's basically just bad communication. I don't know about any of you but I don't really want any business with a faculty that communicates to foreigners like this.
Different school, different course, a good plan B is as good a plan as any. |
