I have a Beeman r7 mounted with ahawke airmax 4-12x40ao. I shimed the rear mount with pop can shims and when I shot for zero I was well within zero as not to be at max adjustments on the scope. I have tried at leat different pellets and all would group pretty nice to my surprise however then would start to walk all over. I mean like 3in high to 4 in low. Everything is nice and tight. I am shooting off a steady sand bag rest . I sent the scope to hawke and they said I was at the max in elevatin and they rezerored it and said it was fine but to get adj mounts but I shimmed instead. I have used scopes on everything from .22 to 300mag and everything in between. I know air guns a finicky to say the least. So what am I doing wrong here or do I have a bad scope. Thanks for any a nd all help.

You haven't mentioned your shooting distance, shooting conditions and pellets being used.

That being said, I am not a fan of the Hawke "AirMax" products- I have seen quite a few blow up on springers (i.e. not "airgun rated" despite making such a claim) and stopped selling them a few months after starting a couple years ago- I think they are highly overrated/overpriced for what they are- at least in North America- can't say what the pricing is elsewhere.

I have two Hawke Airmax Scopes a 3-9x40 AO and a 4-12x40 AO EV, the latest one the EV stay’s on zero all the time , but the 3-9 X 40 will shoot OK all day then the next day it’s off target by up to a couple of inches, I zero it in again and it’s OK for a while then it starts all over again.

I sent it back to Hawke and they said the same as they told you the adjusters were way out, they re-zeroed them but the problem as not really gone away. Personally I think the scope is still faulty. I have sent other scopes back to Hawke and they have repaired them or replaced them with new ones, so I can’t really fault them on their service.

I know this doesn’t help you with your problem you just have my sympathy. Can you try the scope on a different rifle and see if the problem goes away, if it doesn’t then send it back again and tell them it doesn’t work on either rifle.

By the way welcome to AirGunHome.

PS as Eric said the old Airmax did have problems, but the new EV Airmax is an entirly new scope and performs well.

PPS check that the retical is not broken as some older Airmax scopes suffered from this problem.

I returned the supposedly repaired scope just keeps walking, however I shimmed the scope so as to not run out of adj and left the shims in when I returned the 2nd time. They sent me a new ev model in return but implied that I crushed the scope by shimming same. BS. Some mfgs tell you to shim to take out too much mis alignment and people and gun smiths have been doing it since I can remember. Seems they dont like that they had a faulty series of scopes, which if you read on severl forums other people had the same problem. The new scope performs much better. Now my take is forget the lower priced stuff and spend the money on known quality equipment for better performance. imho Thanks guys for the replys.

i assume you made all precautionary checks like make certain of correct tightness of rings and mounts?

did you lap the rings? lapped rings make for a more certain grip on the scope tube.

springers are hard on scopes.

check your stock for tightness and fit.

you might even check to make sure the scope adjustment towers are secure. (I recently had one fall off!)

i sometimes wonder if scopes who claim to be "air-gun rated", really are... Rolling Eyes

I checked everything for bring tight but bought a nikon 3-9x40 efr, uch fine cross hairs an clear as a bell. Idid shim this also and I zeroed a 10 yds with little tweaking to shoot one ragged hole and then jumped out to 33 yds with about a silver dollar size group. The next day shot again and it held zero well. The r7 does not have much recoil, easy cocking and smooth trigger pull, an all around nice gun imho. Thanks for the replys. Pat
