| I bought a Ruger Single-Six 17HMR yesterday, to go along with my Henry lever action 17HMR. What I found amazing was that Ruger just didn't suggest using Hornady ammunition for the revolver, they warned not to use anything but. They sure all look the same to me as to the case. I know the projectile itself weighs different, 20gr as to 17gr and some are hollow point etc etc. Just surprised me is all. |

I think what they mean is don't put any .17HM2 rounds in it, even though they will fit. Here "Hornady" is part of the name for the chambering, just as "Winchester" is in .22WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire). I don't think it instructs you to buy one brand only. If you're unsure, call Ruger. |

| Cases may look the same, but the charge inside may be different depending on what firearm it was made to suit. A barrel or breech made to direct a 25 grain projectile moving at 2100 fps may not be able to safely do the same for a 25 grain projectile moving at 2700-2900 fps due to the increased amount of force. If you weigh the two rounds you should find there would be more than a 3 grain difference due to either the volume of the charge used or the type of charge. |

I would agree if you were considering shooting +P ammunition in a gun that wasn't rated for it, but I don't thing that's the case here. Discounting all other manufacturers, just Hornady offers three loadings in .17HMR. For peace of mind just have a chat with Ruger - I think they know about firearms.

It does not have to be Hornady manufactured, it only has to be ".17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire "
Just like buying boxes of Federal .300 WSM.... Winchester is only part of the rounds designation. |

| Thanks for the replies. Ruger revolvers are pretty tough and I think as long as I'm not firing those specials that do about 3500fps I should be okay. I just bought another 150 rounds of Winchester v-max which is rated about 2500. If nothing else I can use out of the two boxes of Hornady for my revolver and the rest in my Henry lever action rifle. |

| slavia is correct . my henery golden boy in 17 hmr said the same the other rounds are shorter . like a 22 long as to a 22 long rifle only 17 hmr . the bullet wouldnt be in a correct placement . hornady makes the hottest loads for 17 hmr so that has to be why sorta like a boo boo i made by not looking and shooting a 27 in my 30-06 . it had a lower sound and didnt hit anywhere near where i was looking. when i opened the bolt and seen how badly the end of the case was i thought shi% AND THE END SAID 270 WINCHESTER my bad |
