I’ve been out today pigeon shooting in the rain (April Showers), and it’s been rain, sun and back to rain, but what I did notice was that the poi dropper by as much as six inches in the heaviest rain, this was shooting at a range of 30-35m.

This is something I have not noticed before or possibly that in steady rain I haven’t noticed the change. I suppose it all depends how many rain drops the pellet hits on it’s travel. Anyone else noticed this effect?

Al

Interesting observation, Al. Idea
I've not noticed, but I guess I don't go out in the rain to shoot. I suppose the faster the pellet goes, the more rain drops it is likely to hit...just like when you speed up your car from a stoplight and have to speed up the wipers (not including tire spray from traffic).
Humidity affects ballistic coefficient, too, and the nose has got to be bucking some serious water vapor in between the drops.

cheers,
Rob

I wonder if this explains what I saw with how my air rifles shot differently at low elevation, high humidity situations as opposed to my now high elevation, low humidity. I have a post to draft up where Ill explain what I saw, I find it interesting to say the least.

As to the original post, I could see the pellet being beaten down by the rain. Laws of gravity and physics, it doesnt have any other choice but to comply with the extra resistance and added weight I would guess.

I'd like to see the post results when you get it done.

I happened upon this discussion. Makes sense, but they're talking about "powder burners."

Given a rifle-fired projectiles tremendous amount of energy, raindrops have no affect and probably just explode upon contact. If your projectile is only carrying 13 or 25 pounds of energy, I'd say a rain drop would have more influence, but still, rarely actually contact. It would depend on the size of your rain drops, barometric pressure, temperature, x, y, and z.

I'm guessing.

Rain drops contacted is determined by distance travelled and not the speed of the pellet, given all other factors are the same.

I too shot in the rain before, and was defiantely off-target, but I was assuming it was being tossed all over the place, and not just down.

Just got back from London. It's definitely less wet in the Netherlands. Razz

Anyway, depending on the gun, I never really feel bad using an airgun in the rain. Most of the time I prepare it with Ballistol, then go out shooting, and when I come back I take it all off and give it a good cleaning, then I apply a bit of that aforementioned stuff and so far my AG's have been good to go.

You wouldn't believe that we have a drought order over the whole of southern England, plus hosepipe ban’s. Shocked

Hope you enjoyed your trip.

I would say that a pellet could definitely strike at or above center mass of the raindrop and be projected in an upward fashion like a skipping stone. I think it would take a more than a drizzle for that
