The restoration of this Crosman 1400 is completed.... The stock received seven coats of Watco Dark Walnut Danish Oil, each coat wet sanded ending with 600 grit.... It was then waxed with Dark MinWax, three coats.... which resulted in an incredibly smooth finish with a medium gloss.... Here is the results....
In addition to the rebluing, detailed above, the ports have all been brought up to at least 5/32" and the resulting velocities are 515 at 5 pumps, 610 at 8 pumps, and 660 at 10 pumps.... The trigger pull is much lighter than it was to start with, although it is very long.... I'm extremely pleased with the way it turned out.... especially when you see what I started with in the first post....

Sharp looking! How long did it take you to finish it like that? How long did it take to dry between coats? Inquiring minds want to know. |

4-5 hours stripping the old finish, sanding to bare wood (220 grit) and steaming out the dents.... The staining took an hour total, then dry overnight.... The first coat of oil takes a bit over an hour (applying, then basting to keep it wet) then wipe it down every hour or so as the oil comes out of the pores all day.... Two days later, you wet it with oil for 20-30 minutes, then wet sand it, wipe dry (so a total of about an hour) and then wipe it down 2-3 times over the next few hours.... You repeat that over the next 5 days (total of 7 coats, one each day), and I do the first 2 coats sanding with 320 grit, then two at 400 grit, and the last two at 600 grit.... Over the next two days it gets three coats of Minwax.... The total time, start to finish, is about 16 hours, spread over about 11-12 days....
Call it a labour of love....

I'd never have the patience. I can go through and put one coat of stain, then two coats of polyurethane and that is the limit for me. lol It did turn out beautiful though. Now, what is your next project? |

This is my last restoration (finally).... I'm currently working on a .25 cal conversion for my QB 78 regulated HPA (the one with the backwards tank).... and I'm going to be doing a similar conversion to a 2260.... with the plan being to compare the two when completed (kind of a faceoff).... Then I also have to get back to work on my Hayabusa.... Lots of things to do there, starting with a new, longer hammer spring and velocity adjuster, and possibly converting it to rear-cocking.... I still have a couple of other 2260 HPAs that require some attention/updating with new ideas as well.... OH! and I have a new B-51, and my Disco Double conversion kit (going on my 9mm/.308 cal) arriving shortly....
