I have a piece of 1/4" delrin rod that I was hoping to use for buttons. Is 1/4" too large. I was planning to use a 1/4" mill bit, do I need a pilot hole.
I just wanted to make enough of an impression to keep the buttons in place but I'm not familiar with that type of bit. |

No you dont need a pilot hole for a end mill cutter.. What you do need is a rock solid setup or the work will jump.
1/4" buttons should work fine. I have no experience trying to use delrin though. I usually solder wafers of brass onto the piston.
Are you going to superglue them? |

Yes or epoxy, I figure if I get a snug fit the adhesive won't be as critical. I have more of a carpentry/cabinetmaker background but this project doesn't seem to be over my head yet .I will be making an investment in a better vise for my drill press. I was thinking of a cross slide model, then I could try some other small milling projects. |

Getting a cross sliding vice is a great idea. With one of those and a few mill cutters you can do all kinds of things that are normally out of reach.
A few hints when using an end mill
1) if your spot face lock the dovetail slides
2) Attempt to take all of the Lash (dead play) out of the feed screws by installing shims under the collars.
I know the new Gorilla brand superglue claims to be compatible with hard to glue plastics. I"ve used it with success on a few things. |
