How much muzzle velocity would it take to propel this 2000 LB armour piercing projectile to a range of 23 miles like they said on the tour?

I make it about 1970 ft/s if you ignore air resistance. Another acceptable answer would be: PDQ!
Wikipedia says 2,500 to 2,690 ft/s. If that is the 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 gun. |

| I believe that's right, about 2700 fps. You will need a big spring. |

drum roll please....
113,340 ft. tons muzzle energy.... 226,679,000 FPE....
Plus the added "bang" of the HE at impact, of course....

| Thanks for the info. Thats still pretty fast. Yep, it is a 16" gun. The powder is in the thing to the guys LH side. Probably really not powder but they probably have something in the silk bags to make it look that way. I think they said it took 9 or 10 of the bags to load the gun. The barrels are made on a hydraulic system so they retract 4 feet to absorb the recoil. No body is allowed on deck while firing. The blast makes the water smooth they say. This is all on the USS Missouri that is on display at Pearl Harbor that we toured last week. Just thought everyone might like to see this. Notice the copper ring around the base of the bullet. It is made in a cup fashion facing reward. I figured it was to provide a better seal in the barrell. I think they said the barrells weighed 88,000 LBS. |

Bob - as an airgunner, doesn't it give you a bit of a tingle to even contemplate the term "foot-tons"?
Just as an aside, go to the satellite images on Google and look at Pearl Harbor. You can still see the oil plume leaking from the Arizona. |

A 16" barrel (bore, not length) and a lotta air!....
Surprisingly, it would only take 10 psi to support the weight of the shell.... so if you could make a guess how much friction there would be to make it slide down the bore you could figure it out.... If it took another 2000 lbs to overcome the friction then 20 psi of air would make it move....

I still think a spring-piston.
Didn't some 19th century ships using dynamite guns...to launch the relatively unstable dynamite filled shells...use compressed air to more gently accelerate the shells and keep them from detonating in the breech?
This was back when NG based explosives were the only high explosives known. |

Yep, still leaking. I got some pics of that too. You can smell it as well if youre there. Could smell it all the way over to the deck of the missouri too. They say it only leaks a small amount a day. At this time they plan on just letting it leak. |

Well the volume of the barrel is 160,850 cubic inches or 93 cubic feet, if that helps. |

Heck one blast from a SCUBA tank might be enough to have the shell dribble out the end (of a 50 x 16" = 800" barrel) and fall on the deck....
Actually, a shorter barrel would be more efficient at such low pressures and volumes.... If the barrel was "only" 10 feet, the volume would "only" be 14 CF.... An 80 CF SCUBA tank would produce a residual pressure of 83 psi at the muzzle.... enough to still be providing over 4G of acceleration.... (note, I'm still assuming 2000 lbs. of friction forces)....
That assumes you could "dump" the whole 80 CF into the barrel quick enough to empty the tank before the shell reached the muzzle....
