| I've been working on the family history, and boy can you Canadian guys keep records. On the Irish side there is pretty much nothing until they reached these shores in the mid 1800's. On the Canadian side there are church and government records back to 1625. I suspect it might have something to do with the number of pubs per square mile, but I might be wrong. |

That's cool!
Me, I know more than enough about my family. My mother's side was the erudite side with the doctors and the table manners. My father's side were the trouble makers. Smart, mechanically/engineering inclined, and independent, but you know...uh...drinkers. |

Yeah, my records once in Canada are pretty good - the Census' are pretty much online now which makes it easier than going over Microfilms....
Ireland is a disaster.... Before/during? WW2 the government gathered all the Church records into one central depository in Dublin?.... which then burnt down, losing all the records....

Thanks, Al - the last of my people came over in 1863. Another roadblock that I have found relates to "souperism." (Catholics converting to the Church of Ireland for their soup kitchens during the potato famine.) Who knows which church records would have them. I guess someday I'll have to go myself and do the research. If I do, I'll come and visit. It's only a couple hours' walk from Ireland to England, right?
There is a government document from 1853 called "The Valuation of Tenements" that gives the street address of my gg grandfather.
Another hurdle is that we in the U.S. didn't have a central Immigration and Naturalization Service until 1906. Immigrants petitioned a county or circuit court judge for citizenship, so the records are spread all over.
Anyway, it's fun. I'm not in it to prove that I'm secretly the owner of Stonehenge, or anything like that. It's mostly so the kids will have some solid information should they ever become interested. |

A few years ago we took the car and went touring southern Ireland for a holiday and to fill in some gaps in my ancestry, my father was Irish and we used to go over regularly, but the problem is you don’t ask the right questions when your parents are alive.
We were searching graveyards for information but what we did not know was that over their are a lot of graveyards without churches, so no records apart what is on the graves, and there being a lot of poor people who only had a wooden cross, which decomposed over time and all trace was lost. We photographed over 200 gravestones for later referance.
The most information we got was by knocking on the door of a house, that you knew one of my relatives/ancester lived in, and usually all the skeletons would be revealed.
Good Stuff
Where’re only 4 hours away from Dublin so if you come over give me a shout.

Thats great Slavia. Yes it could be the Pubs or it could be the fact that it's dark and cold for half the year and there wasn't anything much better to do than drink, make babies and write about them
My geneology is actually pretty simple for the first few hundred years. I'm the 6th generation on the same piece of land.
Past that one family branch is really easy as it is the House of Stewart
The other branch is McGowan which means Smith from Cambeltown. We've been and seen the church record for GrGr and GrGrGr.....but after that is the abyss.

You will have to be quick Sean the Scott's are after independence, and the English are also rooting for them to get it.

Same here. My ancestors came from a small town in Ireland (Schull), and mostly settled together in Wisconsin. Most of them are in a township cemetary near the settlement. There is a "find a grave" organization, and someone took the trouble of enumerating everyone in that cemetary, along with photos of the markers for many.

Ain't that the truth.

I can understand that. Minnesota is dark and cold for half the year, I already had my beer for the year, my babies are grown, so guess what I'm doing..... |
