I'm looking to spend $250 on a squirrel gun for this spring. I like the idea of the nitro piston vs the spring. I won't buy a CO2 gun or a PCP. I am leaning pretty heavy towards .22 and away from .177. The big question is should I buy a cheaper gun and build it up or should I buy something that's more of a complete package?

Here's what I like so far:

- Build up a Crosman Nitro venom (.22) buy adding a leapers 3-9-40 and a Charlie da Tuna trigger. I can get this gun from Walmart.

- Buy a Remington NPSS .22 and be done with it. I'd buy it from pyramid air most likely. I'm willing to spend a little more and get the complete package if the consensus is that it's worth it.

- Add a Charlie da Tuna trigger to a Benjamin Tail NP .22. Probably pyramid air or from amazon.

What do you think? Any other suggestions? Am I missing something? Penny for your thoughts.

Why not go a little higher and get the Discovery in 22?

If it were me, Id probably go with the NPSS just for the reason of it being built in the USA. Im actually lusting over one hard, but the same can be said for a .22 Discovery...

A discovery, while only $260, requires either a $100 pump to charge or continual trips to the dive shop. It's a cool gun, but there are just too many strings attached to the PCP system.

I was in your situation a few months ago. My choices were the Marauder, Discovery, NPSS, Whisper Deluxe, or Nitro Venom. I chose the Nitro Venom, because I got it cheap. At the time, $115 shipped. But let me tell you, it was not a great buying experience. Due to poor quality control, I've had to send it back twice. I'm currently on my 3rd, and last Nitro Venom. I have the .177 in Wood Stock.

The Venom I have now shoots good. Quarter size groups at 25 yards with JSB Exact 8.4 grains. The CenterPoint scope that comes with it is pretty much useless after 15 yards. It starts to blurr, and the parallax error becomes too great. You'll want to get a AO scope for it. This gun is well capable of shooting 8.4 grain pellets past 40 yards with very decent velocity to take out squirrel. Accuratcy however, is another story. Hope you get a well made one. I spent a total of under $200 for my Venom set-up so far with a new CenterPoint 4-16x40 AO scope.

Maybe just go to Walmart and get the Beeman Grizzly X2, RS2, 1073 (lots of model numbers on that box) dual caliber springer.
That is a heck of an accurate and powerful gun for an out-of-the-box rifle, less than $100, in my opinion. I think the scope is actually pretty good too. Spend the leftover money on pellets. Much as I hate Walmart, that Chinese Beeman is a good deal, I think. The trigger is adjustable and pretty decent.

I like my Titan GP and also my custom 2400. THey are both below 250, and in the case with the Titan, well below 250.

I thought hard about a RWS 34. In the end I decided that I wanted to try the new nitro piston. I bought a Benjamin trail NP in .22. I'll post about the gun once it arrives and I get it all cleaned up. Thanks everybody for all the input.

that is pa price btw, benjamin trails are nice just made in china, n thus have heard of alot of people loving their gun but had to return their original one

i have the benjamin trail np in .22 cal and it is good for the money , and quiet with very little recoil. but dont expect a scremer it is only shooting 726fps with a rws superdome pellet 8.4g but it is extramly consistant at 25-30 yards putting nickel size groups
