hi there my names alex, 19 years old, i LOVE firearms. bought my first gun as SOON as i turned 18..

BUT i dont get to shoot real guns nearly as much as i like cuz i live in the city.. so i just spent 60$ (on sale) on a crossman phantom (1.77) from walmart.
i was wondering if anyone could give me alittle review on the crossman phantom? on durability and such?

and also, how long do you think it takes for a break barrel to start loosing power if it lasts long enough?? i like things that last..and i take good care of them :)

thank you!

Welcome to the Forum!

The Crosman Phantom is an awesome air gun for the price! It is fast, accurate, and the Synthetic Stock makes the air gun very durable. However if you have the money, you may want to upgrade the 4x32 AR22 Scope, to maybe a CenterPoint 3-9x40.

You won't really lose power until the Spring starts to wear out. That all depends on how often you plan on shooting the Phantom, but it could usually take about a year or so. On the bright side, springs are not expensive. I think they are about $30 at Crosman's Website!

O.K., it's soapbox time: Your Phantom is a real gun, and demands the same safety procedures as any other. A gun is a tool, and the tool you bought is an excellent choice for small game, pest control, shooting indoors, and economical practice. (All done with the safety rant.)

Definitely. There are several models that use the same platform - I have the G1, which is a Phantom minus the open sights and plus a muzzle brake. I'm very happy with it.

Your Phantom could take 500-1000 shots to break in. During that period try different pellets, because many guns have a distinct preference. Also practice the "artillery hold," where you use the lightest hold possible while still maintaining control of the gun.

Don't worry about the spring. Avoid dry-firing or light pellets and you should be fine. (Pellets in the 5-6 grain range or no pellet at all let the piston slam into the end of the cylinder, possibly causing damage.) The one weak point of the platform is the trigger. If you ever have $40 laying around you might consider one of the aftermarket triggers - they drop in without surgery and are the biggest single improvement that you can do.

Poke around this forum for target ideas, have fun, and report back to us on your progress.

You may want go a little larger. The recoil from the Phantom could actually break the Scope.

Your Phantom has recoil pulses in two directions instead of just one like the 12 gauge. It's that bidirectional recoil that can trash a reticle unless the scope is braced for it (i.e., is rated for springer airguns).

You will probably be O.K. with the cheap scope, but start saving up for a larger one. I have used the 15mm/20mm scopes, but was never happy with the field of view or clarity (the lenses are sometimes plastic). But then who am I to criticize? My guns have plumbing bits, bicycle parts, even pieces of pancake griddles. Cheap is good.

Springers do fall in the category of an Airgun, so you should be okay. If it does break, its not like you spent hundreds of dollars on a Rifle scope. I do know some people that have done it! They have spent Hundreds of Dollars on a Rifle scope not mean't for airguns, and it broke within a week! Shocked

yea. i agree the field of view isn't the best with 20mm :/
but i like the fact that a 15$ scope can zoom between 4-7x, its a fun effect :)
