There will be the occasional time where I'd accidentally fire my Gamo CFX without a pellet in the breach or I'd fire it with the breach open and a round in.

How bad is this for the gun? I don't want to break the damn thing because of my own negligence.

Dry firing any piston gun (springer or gas-ram) is not good for it as the piston/seal will crash into the end of the chamber instead of an air cushion.... Accidents happen, but try to be careful as it CAN do a lot of harm to the gun, even break the spring....

As rsterne said, Accidents happen, but Dry firing an Airgun could potentially put the Airgun in a non working state. It will ruin the seals completely.

Try to stay away from Light Weight, Lead Free pellets as well. Shooting 2.5 Gr. pellets in a .177 Airgun is basically like Dry-firing.

I am not sure because I got rid of my CFX Royal a good while back, but if I remember correctly I could pull down the under lever when the rifle was cocked and open the chamber. if that is correct then if it was cocked and the chamber was empty then you may be able to with the under lever pulled down rotate the chamber and add a pellet.
Maybe but not sure just an idea.
