Went out exploring today and took along the rifle....1500 feet above the Tulameen Valley floor....

Got three nice grouse, a young Ruffie, a big male Franklin's and a female Franklin's (Spruce)....

You can sure tell the difference in the colour of the meat on the Ruffed Grouse (left)....

What a SUPERB day.... 3 shots, 3 Grouse.... Mr. Green

Bob

Bob,
Congrats on the grouse, but I have to say the first image overlooking the valley is breath taking. I've been living on the flat Indiana farm land too long!!!

I loved the pics Bob. The treeline is just stunning. Is that a walk or a drive? Good eating too!

That photo was taken about 10km (6mi.) by ATV from our house.... We did hike about 2km. round trip exploring a trail we couldn't get the Rhino up later in the day.... but at 63, most of my exploring is by ATV.... I've never been one to walk more than a couple miles.... We covered nearly 50km. yesterday....

Yeah, I know how that walking thing is. I have a bad knee and a bad back, so most of my off road experience is in my little Chevy tracker. It's not much bigger than a rhino. I can get just about anywhere I want in it. I just wish it looked that good here in Ohio. My most adventurous spot is the woods next to my farm. There are off road parks here, but they don't look that good either.

Looks like someone's having some good eats tonight Mr. Green I have to admit though, I'm a bit jealous Crying or Very sad Not much game around these parts these due to a surplus of hawks. I spotted 3 of them circling the skies yesterday.

Our biggest problem here is the (protected) Ravens.... We have had a population explosion because of the Princeton Landfill.... They are DEATH on chicks for any birds.... Evil or Very Mad

Great shots! That scenery is magnificent. It looks like the mountains over here in New York.

Ravens aren't protected here and I take down every one I get a shot at. Same goes for starlings too. It's just my little way of helping the environment. Razz

I actually prefer ravens over blue jays. I hate hearing flocks of jays in trees close to my house incessantly squawking every hour ganging up on other birds. They killed a raven in my yard one time doing that. Chopped the head off and took the body leaving the head in my yard. I don't ever hear the ravens hardly at all so they don't bother me but the jays with their ear piercing squawks kill me. I wish the raven population would outgrow the jays here and leave some jay heads in my yard and drive them away from my area. I wish there were more hawks here to help with that too but I only see one every now and then. They're never around when you need them.

We have Stellar's Jays here (lots of them, we feed them peanuts).... They are BC's official bird.... Unbelievable immitators, they do a Red-Tailed Hawk call that is near perfect.... They are a bit bigger than a robin, but smaller than a Crow.... Our Ravens here are HUGE.... They are the size of a Red-Tailed hawk, and the beak is about 3" long and 1" tall at the base and the head is a solid 2" diameter.... Wayyyyyyyy bigger than a Grouse except a Blue might be similar in weight but not wingspan or length....

Blue Jays do the same hawk call but you can tell it's not a hawk since it sounds like a half way non committed inconsistent attempt lacking the forceful consistent call of the hawk, and it's quiet compared to the much louder hawk too, plus they usually blow their cover by jaying immediately afterward also. They have a similar shape to the Cardinal since they are of the same species but they are a little larger than the Cardinals and are smaller than the Ravens which can grow up to almost 2ft long here from beak to tail.
