I hope everybody on the board is safe after Irene. It was pretty nasty from what I have been seeing on TV. Canada is supposed to be getting the remnants of this, so I hope you are out of the path Eric. Anybody heard from some of our Canadian friends?

Well other than having an extremely busy day yesterday saving IDIOTS from themselves I'm fine. I was at work on the western end of Lake Ontario. I really wish I could hand out idiot fines.

Eric has been on several times today and our area ( I live close to Eric) didn't get hit too hard. Some rain and decent wind. The extreme east side of Ontario and Quebec are getting drenched similar to what Vermont got.

I love the idea of idiot fines, almost every time I've gone into the woods for a rescue with either the fire department or a search and rescue team its because of idiots. Could probably fund half the government on the fines from all the tickets too Smile They do have something like that out west, just wish they would bring it out to the ease too.

They now have them here, they just call it rescue reimbursement. The biggest case so far was a drunk driver that was charged 60 grand in rescue fees after he had driven off a bridge and they had to extricate him from the car. Sounds reasonable to me. Now people are getting charged for medical needs if they are involved in a crime. I can understand it. Somebody's got to pay for it and I don't think it's fair for the local government to have to do it.

Okay I'll share the story of the one that really ticked me off Sunday.

We get a call just as we were coming in for lunch that a small sail boat was knocked down and foundering with one person in the water. The reporting party said the sail boat was within 200meters of shore so we had to take the Hurricane Zodiac. It's designed to beach in surf and we can sacrifice an engine and still have one left to save our own butts if need be.

The winds had been sustained 40 knots for hours gusting up to 50 and we and the call were on the breaking shore so the seas were 9' plus and really confused and angry. Basically coming at you from every direction.

We headed out on the call and it was like being inside a washing machine. the waves would curl right over us and break right on top. The inside of the Zodiac was full of water 50% of the time. And through this we plowed for 7 miles.

We found buddy clinging to his keel, looking like a drowned rat about 50 meters from shore. We scooped him up and dropped him off to the waiting ambulance, firefighters and police. then went out and gathered up the wreckage of his laser sized sail boat and ran it into the nearby marina harbour.
On the docks in the harbour was a big crowd of people watching this commotion and everyone was just itching to tell us their story. Apparantly the MORON had showed up on the boat launch about an hour before and multiple people had told him not to go out...including the marina owner. But Moron wouldn't listen to anyone, jumped in his boat and proceeds to flip it twice before he ever left the shelter of the marina harbour. The marina owner jumped in his little harbour boat and ran out to help the guy and haul him back to the launch, but moron pulls the sheet tight and sails out of the harbour. 5 minutes later he was upside down and getting thoroughly raped by a breaking stormed.

Of course their was dozens of people watching the show so the 911 calls were off the hook over this guy.

After hearing all the stuff from the folks on shore I was fuming and stomped up to have a word with moron in the ambulance. The regional police saw me coming and intercepted my path before I could give the idiot a tuning in. The Regional was a friend of mine and he got me calmed down and said they were combing through every bit of morons gear. So far they had him for no whistle....a paltry $500 fine.

So thats it. If we hadn't got him for a whistle he would have gotten off scott free after willfully causing sheer chaos and tying up thousands in resources for 2 hours.
Yes I strongly feel that idiot fines are long overdue
