Any one used these pellets? I bought a tin recently thinking they'd work well, judging by shape & weight.
Man was I WRONG. They don't fit my gun at all,the skirt always sticks out. [/img]

They look similar to the H&N Rabbit Magnum.... I couldn't get those to shoot out of any gun I have in either .177 or .22 cal....

I think the only difference is the container Both the H & N and these are by my observation the same thing. I wonder if anyone has ever had any luck using them, w/out the fitting issues. |

By not shoot I mean their accuracy was terrible....

I think those actually do work in guns that have over 50 FPE or something, but I can't back that up. I think I may have read about it somewhere but I forgot where... |

Problem is that the tins says "for rifles over 15 FPE" in .177 and "for rifles over 18.5 FPE" in .22 cal.... I've tried the .177 in a 20 FPE rifle and the .22 cal in a 36 FPE rifle and was lucky to get 6" groups at 20 yards with the H&Ns....

| And the painful thing is that judging by weight, balance & aerodynamics, these pellets look like they can do some real damage. |

H&N's (and perhaps these Diana's if they are just re-labels) come in a multitude of sizes- i.e. 4.48mm, 4.49mm, 4.50mm, 4.51mm and 4.52mm for .177 and a slightly narrower range in .22: 5.49mm, 5.5mm and 5.51mm.
While this is all great if you want to shop for an exact fit for your barrel- it doesn't guarantee anything in respect to accuracy- and I have noted that some sellers of their pellets don't mention these size differences and you almost "get what you get" which almost invariably means you get something that won't fit your barrel properly. From a sales perspective, this is a giant pain-in-the-butt having to try and advise/re-advise people on them, and then the only answer really is "I have no idea what your barrel will prefer- just stick with the x.49 or x.50 and you should (should) be okay" which is a poor sales methodology. As a result, I know of a couple of vendors that won't carry them at all because of this sort of thing- too much talking/fiddling/discussion and still no good conclusion until someone buys a specific size, tries it, and hopefully, god willing, gets the right size on the first crack... |

| If thats the case all those diameter variances those pellets are going to be a real pain to deal with. Most shops here either don't know or care about such things, and thats got to be bad for the store's reputation eventually at some point. Hopefully the manufacturer stops that practice soon, and stick to standard caliber diameter measurements. |

I think you will find that only pellets intended for serious target work come in a multitude of sizes.... H&N and JSB both make Match pellets (wadcutters) in several incremental diameters.... They also both make round nose pellets intended for Field Target work in several sizes.... I believe that H&N also make their heavy Baracuda Match pellets in 2 or 3 diameters....
By far the majority of pellet types are not graded by diameter and sold that way.... nor for average shooting would it make a signfiicant difference.... Remember that 0.01mm is only 0.00039".... ie 4 "ten-thousandths" of an inch.... When you consider that most pellets in a tin may vary by as much as 3 to 5 thousandths of an inch from the biggest to the smallest.... you can see how little difference it makes if pellets are actually 4.50mm or 4.54mm (1.5 thou difference)....

Bob,
I did the same figurations on pellet diameters early on then decided to go with the largest size pellet as the size difference is so small that the tighter fit would not be detrimental in any way. I have now gone with 4.52mm in several pellets and all function similar with good results. My FX 400 eats a steady diet of JSB Exact, Exact Heavy, and H&N Baracuda Match all in 4.52mm and is grouping each pellet nicely. |

| The problems arise when you get 'larger' units in a barrel that is, for whatever reasons, on the smaller end of things- or perhaps even fell out of the normal tolerance range for size (i.e. barrel lands are at 4.47mm)- then you try and jam a 4.52mm pellet in there- and what happens? |

The hardened lands will ride 0.0019" deeper into the soft lead at most from the figures you used. I just read on another forum that good PCP barrels are choked another .0005" at the end for better performance. What are the industry specs on proper land diameter for a .177 barrel? |

I don't know about the lands.... but it is the groove diameter that is supposed to 0.177" (4.50mm).... In .22 cal the groove diameter is 0.217" (5.51mm).... If all the barrels were made to a higher standard then even the target shooters wouldn't have a need for different diameters.... IMO....
I just looked at H&N's list.... and the only pellets that are made in anything OTHER than 4.50 or 5.50 mm are Match pellets, FTTs, and Baracuda Match....
Seriously, take a micrometer and go through a tin of RWS or Crosman pellets and then tell me that 0.0015" on the head diameter (the skirts are a LOT bigger) makes a difference.... IMO it's well within the tolerance levels allowed by the manufacturers for anything other than target pellets....

| So what we're suggesting is that the skirt diameter has no quality control worth speaking of, or if the head is, for example, 4.52mm they don't modify the size of the skirt as well? Seems to me that the skirt will jam up with quite a number of pellets unless the barrel is on the outer end of diameter. |
