Took these pictures after seeing this bird wandering about my yard last week. Not planning to shoot it or such- but I'm no "bird guy". What the heck is it? Some type of grouse?

Ruffed Grouse aka Willow Grouse.... yummy!....
The black on the neck can be displayed as a "ruff" or collar, mostly by the males during mating season but also when startled (makes them look bigger I guess).... The males beat their wings in a "thump - thump - thump-thump-thumpthumpthump drumming manner during courtship display that produces a low frequency sound that carries for a LONG distance....
Best shot is the back corner of the eye.... during open season of course....

Ruffed grouse. Let him live until fall when he has had a steady diet of nuts and seeds he will taste awesome |

| Yes that is a Ruffed Grouse. Dont have any near me, but read in a book that they are similar to pheasants. |
