Just signed up. Subject line is somewhat misleading. I don't have an airgun yet. I need something I can shoot without driving 50 miles to a range.
Looking at PCP airguns. Not looking forward to pumping but maybe I can do that until I figure out something else(scuba tank?).

Welcome to AirGunHome John, to save yourself driving 50 miles to a range, depends on your situation at home, do you have a large yard/garden or a basement you can use?
As for a pcp you should try and get a scuba tank as soon as possible, pumping takes all the fun out of it.

I think somewhere I read that scuba tanks are no longer usable for diving after some period of time or use. Hopefully, I can find one of these and a dive shop close enough to refill. Approx. how many recharges can you get from one tank fill?

All tanks require a test certificate no matter what use they are put to, I’m not to sure what the test period is but no certificate no fill.
The amount of shots you can get varies considerably depending on the gun and fill pressure, also the size of tank makes a big difference, in general a PCP will get between 20 to 40 shots per fill and maybe 20 to 40 fills per tank. These figures are vague because there are so many combinations of gun, tank and pressure.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to do a little research and investigation into dive shops in "my area", which will have to be about a 150 mi radius since I'm in the boonies, so to speak.

| You don't have to jump in with both feet so to speak. Get you a little wal-mart spriner or CO2 rifle to try out first. That way you aren't out so much if you decide you don't like it. |

I agree. If you have the resources and the higher initial cost of PCP's doesn't bother you, then by all means go PCP. On the other hand, Oddtodd has a valid point - and you can do a lot with a less sophisticated gun. There are online sources as well as Walmart. In any event, welcome to the sport, and to the forum. |

Hi John and Welcome to the forum,
Glad to have you join. I'll agree with Todd & Al, to start out small to get a feel for Air Gun Shooting if your new to it?
IMHO, a Break Barrel Nitro Piston Air Rifle which cocks with only 'One' firm downward stroke of the barrel and is self contained is probably the best and most convient way to get started, especially considering the distance you have to travel otherwise!
Save all the time and expense unless your looking to go after some fairly large game?
Yet there are those on the forum that have claimed, in the BS section or it should have been LoL, to have taken Bear and Water Buffalo and Big Wild Hogs with nothing more than a little .177!?? Can you believe it? LoL So maybe you can get away with less?? LoL ROTF-LMAO
I just couldn't resist a little humor.
Welcome to the forum,
David |

I know it sounds like BS, but I saw the gamo advertisement with my own eyes that showed a wild pig being dropped with a big cat 1200. Besides the poor quality of the one I owned along with their misleading advertizing I won't own another one.

Many years ago.
In fact shot my first bb gun there. Shot my first 410 there.
Plenty of room to shoot.
Just thinking of getting back to an air rifle myself |

| If you are getting into PCPs, a good one to start out with I would say is the Benjamin Discovery. It is a great PCP for beginners, and it even comes with a Hand Pump! For about $379.00 it is a great PCP for someone on a budget! |

I've had to put air gun plans on hold. Our younger(40) son is finally getting married and I'm on a budget so I can meet all the expenses. It is a myth that the brides father is the only one on the hook for large expenses.
When I get to the point that I can afford another gun, I suspect it will be a springer and somewhat inexpensive. I've got too many cartridge firearms now and somehow another want shows up.
Thanks for the welcome.
SF48, I'm about 80-90 mi from Memphis.
