Last summer our two grand-nieces spent some time with us at our retirement property up in the NE corner of Washington.
Being big city girls, they were excited about being in the woods.
They wanted something to show their friends back home, so I decided to let them use one of my traps to catch a squirrel.
After a few pictures, the squirrel would be released unharmed... No harm no foul..
They took an apple for bait and off they went....
I guess I should have told them what a squirrel was...
All my best,
Steve |

| You've got a real problem if they decide to bring those "squirrels" home for pets. |

I can just see training them to use a litter box. |

Obviously the photo shopped picture was found somewhere on line and plagiarized for my joke.
However, our retirement property is real.
Back yard of our retirement property in the NE corner of Washington
Note the outhouse location.
And we really do have several Black Bear that live on our 27 acres
Second year sow coming for her frequent visit
View is out of our trailer window
Bear's" favorite resting spot.
Probably likes the smell. Overhead log is where we hang out deer.
Needing to be able to face any situation, this handsome guy (me) is showing off his Air Gun reloads for my Grandson's Gamo Viper.
Reloads include Buck Shot (Size 6) for the larger dangerous game.
Note same outhouse common to all pictures
See details about 22 airgun shot reloads in my up and coming report to be posted to my Grandpa's Backyard Grasshopper Safari thread. |

Thanks Steve... you just answered a question that's been rolling around in my head... "Can you re-load Gamo shot shells?"
I've been mulling over in my head to do a HPA Air Shotgun...
I was looking at the old Crosman Trap air gun shells... they are .380 and very hard to find... |

Joe, have you looked into the direction of the Phillipine Farco shotguns? There's also been a bunch of Korean air-shotties out there.
In my opinion a gawjus looking gun. |

I looked... I wana' build one with a regulated tank... I had lunch with Greg (Bluefork Design) this afternoon....
Going to do a 1/2 breed... Electronic dump valve and trigger like in some paintball guns... Pre-measured volume after the Regulator.
Of course Greg wants to go .410 so he can shoot .45 Long slugs too... I like his idea... you can reload standard .410 shells minus the primer and powder.
Keep it totally quiet with a shroud... Oh Yea!!!!!!!! |

One of the longer range plans for my Hayabusa is to do a .410 shotgun version.... I plan on using all brass cases, drill out the primer hole as an air port, and use standard 1/2 oz. shot cups with an overshot card.... The Hayabusa has a 115 cc Plenum and if that's not enough at 2000 psi I'll either bump the regulator to 2500 or bypass the regulator and use the full 3000 psi....
I'm getting an old Mossberg barrel with the C-Lect Choke.... adjustable from full Cylinder through Improved, Modified, to Full choke.... I plan a flow-through bolt with an O-ring to seal on the shell base around the air port....
Should be an interesting project, for sure....

Plans for this project will be for a break action style with spring loaded shell ejector....
The tank will be part of the stock like the old L&C air rifle.
I'm sticking with the standard .410 shells... Reloading presses are cheap enough...
The air injection probe will mate where the primer would be, with a o-ring seal.
Greg is working on the straight through dump valve design. |

Danger... Danger...Danger!!!
A 410 shot bore is a true .410 inch in diameter.
A 45 Colt Bullet measures .452 inches.
You CANNOT safely shoot a 45 bullet in a 410.
I blame most of the confusion on this subject on the clueless marketing types that hype the 45/410 combination guns.
The Judge & TC 45/410 Contender come to mind.
Virtually ALL of the so called combination guns are 45s with an extended chamber that will accommodate a 410 shot shell.
The 410 shot charge (or slug if used) can safely rattle down the .452 in barrel.
Because of the thickness of the 410 shotgun case, the chamber has to be wide enough to accept it.
However, inside the thick case, the diameter is 410 inch as is the bore.
A dangerous coincidence is that this enlarged chamber is both wide enough and long enough to allow a 45 Colt (There is no "Long" or "Short") cartridge to be inserted.
If this is actually fired, the poor 452" bullet has to squeeze down to 410". Pressures go astronomical!
At this point in the discussion I usually hear that someone's friend, etc. "does it all the time" with no problems.
However when pressed if that individual has actually seen it done, it turns out that "No, but he told me he did", or the firearm in question was actually a 45 in the first place.
You can't ignore or defeat the laws of physics or mechanics.
If you want to duplicate this idea, shoot a 308 cartridge in a 270 Winchester rifle .... Sound stupid?
So is shooting a 45 in a real 410.
.................................................................................................................................................
For the project being discussed here, I recommend bullets designed for the 41 Magnum, or going a bit smaller to the 10MM/40 cal bullets so that they will actually safely go down the barrel.
It won't really matter which you use because without rifling you will be throwing knuckle ball accuracy anyway.
Personally, I would go to a 40 Cal cast round ball with a wad behind it. This would at least give "Musket" performance.
At reasonably close air gun ranges, this should give better accuracy and termanal performance than a tumbling / key holing bullet shape.
My 2 cents
Please always heed the 45 in 410 Caveat |

That sound like a great project.
A while back I bought some Russian 410 steel case loads from the Sportsman's Warehouse.
They are a full 3" without a crimp. Shot well in my modified TC Contender.
These cases may be easier to find than brass, and be much stronger. |
