Well the weather finally improved enough that I could take the converted Phantom out and give it a good workout yesterday. The winds were 10 to 15 km/hr variable and thats the best I've seen in weeks.

I got about 250 shots of with a full range of ammo and there is no doubt that the Phantom really likes the JSB Heavy's

Here is a pic of a 30 m group

It shoots a great group at 30 m but if I try to stretch that to 50m it looks like shotgun scatter. I'm thinking that a) there was a cross breeze for sure between the 30 and 50m ranges and b) the flight time has just simply crossed beyond the point of Too Long.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Bob?

Could be a number of things.

Great to see that tight group at 30m. It took me about that many shots to make groups like that at 25 yards. I haven't taken the shooting out any further.

For the 50m distance,

1. could be the wind
2. gun might still be settling
3. shooter? If it were me shooting your gun, you'd probably see a shotgun patter as well. Just a thought. I've been shooting about 30 years and still don't have the steadiest hand. Who knows.
4. trigger ... many of the people on the web swear by the GTRIII trigger that fits your gun. THey say it's night and day. I've never used one, but I'm considering it.

There definitly something going on.

The 10, 20 and 30m meter groups all line up on a perfect tangent. at 50 though the group spread increases by a factor of 10.

The phantom is heavily modded and there already is a GTX II trigger on it. I agree with what you've heard it is one of the best mods going.

I'm in the process of bush whacking a new range to check to see if its a wind funnel playing tricks on me. I live in a very hilly ridgy area and wind funnels are everywhere

Time will tell Smile

I think you have probably offended a whole airgun demographic- posting "Phantom" in a "target shooting" area!

Oh my...

Haha, Like my mama used to say..."stupid is as stupid does"

And offended the other demographic by posting a 30m, 1/2" group and whining that I can't get to 50

I've made some progress on my quest to tune a phantom as far as I possibly can. Hopefully I wont raise the ire of any target purists Wink

I spent more time tuning the barrel weights and managed a repeatable under 1" group at 50 meters (55yds)

This one measures 0.875 by my eye... I'm happy

edit: Oh yes I forgot something. The position was standing but rested on a pile of timber.

Maybe I should post up some of the crazy tight groups my Quest is printing at 50 yards in this section if it really gets anyone's dander up lol. 100 dollar gun doing well under an inch? Ouch, sucks to have paid 5 times that to get the same! Nice groups btw

I think you should. We could have a "how far can you push a $100 gun" club Mr. Green
