Hi all,
I'm Luis. New to the forum. New to using an airgun too. I found what i thought was a good deal on a refurb Titan NP from airgunsdaily.net and went ahead and picked it up for 100 bucks. I did a good bit of reading about it, and went ahead and used blue locktite on all the scope mounts and replaced the trigger with a GRT-III from charliedatuna. It seems popular.

Now i'm about 400 pellets in (the only .22 pellets available in my area are the CPHPs) , and although it's powerful as all get-out, I can't get the darn thing zeroed. I've been trying to zero it at ~25 yards. My groupings are pretty massive... up to 3". Resting the gun lightly on rolled up towels. I'm in the army and not a bad shot...
I've cleaned the barrel once... anything else I can do get this thing set? I'm slightly frustrated, and considering sending it back to Crosman to get it checked out. (but shippings pretty high for a large 8 lb box... not sure i want to go that route yet)

Any tips, tricks, hints?
Thanks, all~ Mr. Green

Welcome Luis to Air Gun Home from Pflugerville, Texas. Sounds like you may not know about something called Artillery Hold. It is a way of holding a springer type air rifle that allows it to move when fired as opposed to holding a power burner still when firing. you can read more about it here...

Welcome to the forum!

Donec is absolutely right. Hold the gun as lightly as possible while still maintaining control. With a death grip it's hard to keep the vibration pattern consistent from shot to shot. My Titan bucks a lot, too.

Pellet choice can have a huge impact, also. Maybe try one of the sampler packs available from internet vendors.

The trigger upgrade was a good move.

Take a cotton swab and dab at the muzzle crown. If it snags any fibers it could be a candidate for polishing.

I was having similar grouping issues until these guys turned me on to the Artillery hold as well. Immediately my groups became 50% tighter and then I started realizing the GAMO pellets I was shooting were crap.

I use my air gun for pest control and recently switched to Polymag Predator pellets. They are precision made and extremely consistent! I can group every one of them inside a quarter at 35 yards

yeah. i support the rifle on a pair of rolled up towels. neither one on the barrel. i just use my hands to steady the rifle and try to be as gingerly as possible with it. when i have a shot going high and left, then one high and right, and a third with correct elevation but far off to the right... well frankly i'm a little disheartened. I will try the artillery hold and get back to you guys.

Lastly. have you guys heard of washing your pellets and lubing them? do any of you do this? does it help? if so, how much?

I've never tried the wash and lube. I've heard of it and there is a video on youtube of a guy doing this.

Your towels should be fine, just let it rest gently against your shoulder and don't grab it rigidly with your shooting hand. Sounds like you are doing all this correctly though.

It could be your pellet as some of the others here are suggesting. Try buying an assortment pack with different brands and see what happens with each brand. Sounds like the ones you are using may be the issue.

Also, try zeroing it at 10 yards first, then stretch it out further. This may help you see what you or the gun may be doing wrong.

Welcome!

I'd recommend getting a good understanding of, and lots of practice, using the "artillery hold" before moving on to washing/lubing pellets...one thing at a time......and believe me the artillery hold DOES take a lot of practice to get it right------just a suggestion...but if ya get too many things going on at once it can be very frustrating!!!

If your resting it on towels to shoot then you should be halfway there, I would agree with Slavia and check the muzzle crown, and if necessary re do it.

Seeing as it's a refurbished unit also check the barrel to reciver joint for sloppiness and the stock screws for tightness.

BTW Welcome to AurGunHome

Al

What all of the above posters said. Learn and use the artillery hold. try different pellets...I think you've changed triggers??? I got my Titan today from Wally World and I've put about 150 pellets through it. I hate the trigger, so it'll probably have to go.

I'd suggest starting to zero at 10 yds, then move out once you get it online. Think someone else said that too.

Also, you may have a bad scope. Got another one you can try?

I've used several different pellets in mine and the problem if there is one is me and or the trigger.

Actually, when I squeeze through smoothly, it'll drive tacks. Stay after it, it'll be worth it!

I love all you guys already!
Got home and put about 25 rounds in a target before the sun went down. My groupings got exponentially better at 10 yards. about 1/2 inch. A few strays here and there, but i'm sure that is mostly my own error. I did notice my reticle was off by about 10 degrees... that can be fixed. I'll be practicing my artillary hold.

I would eventually like to get a new scope. Walmart sells a Tasco 3-9x40 for something like 30 bucks. simmons scope 3-9x40 for $41 Worth it? or is it just going to bust on me?
I dont want to spend tooooo much.
Thanks.

I simply don't see the need for a variable zoom scope for an air rifle so I bought this 4x32 Adj AO for about $50 shipped.

It's no Leupold, but once sighted in properly with the actual pellets you are going to shoot it will get the job done with a lot more consistency and precision than I am personally capable of. As it stands right now with the Predator pellets, if the shot is off I am pretty much sure I am at fault and not the scope. The Mil-Dot is just gravy...

Just make sure it's rated for your type of gun. Springers (and I'm assuming pistons as well) have a dual recoil, instead of single. I understand this can destroy regular scopes, even nice ones.

I like being able to adjust mine for my "mood," I guess. It is typically set at 6, but I like being able to zoom in and out. If I'm stretching out past 25 yards, I like to be able to zoom in on my target and see how I'm doing without getting up and marching down range. The 9x helps a bunch with that. Just my .02. Smile

I certainly won't beleaguer the fact that is a level of convenience to an adjustable scope, but I also feel it throws another set of variables into the equation. I can go from 7 to 30 yards to 100+ yard kill shots on ground squirrels that none of my shooting buds with variable zoom scopes seem to be able to make and I personally think they just have too many things going on with their sighting technique combined with the inherent error of the scope. As I mentioned before these aren't Leupold or Swarovski optics we are dealing with and as such they have their limitations. I say this with a degree of certainty as I have switched guns with them on occasion and they seem to improve their chances of longer range shots with my set-up while my shots are as bad as theirs were with their own rifle regardless of the zoom power.

For the record I really like this forum. I'm still a newb, but I like the, dare I say, caliber of members here Smile

In respect to lubing pellets, look here: http://www.airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=586

Cleaning pellets is one thing, but "lubing" them is something else altogether...
