Hey everyone,
I am looking for a new air rifle to replace the Daisy I got as a kid.
Looking to get some thing for fun as well as back yard pest control, wood chucks. My brother has been successful with a Beaman (sp?) .177 spring air, but usually takes more than one shot. I would like some thing in either a .22 or .25, but what?
The nitro piston's look great but so many to choose from, also thought about the old pump up style like the Banjaman / Sheridan's.
I am looking for some thing accurate, hard hitting, and won't break the bank.
Some thing in the $200.00- $350.00 range
Thanks
Steve |

Hey Steve,
I'm pretty new to this too but since I just bought a Benjamin Trail NP XL in .22 cal. and I have a Benjamin/Sheridan 397P (.177 multipump)
I bought for my son years ago, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth.
The NP hits like a truck but I've been less than thrilled with the accuracy.
I'm getting better but the recoil is really weird and my groups are not what I expected.
I can get about a 1.5 in groups (10 rnds) at 15 yrds, 3 in groups at 20 yrds, and that's with the 3x9 scope and a bench rest!
The 397 on the other hand I shot out the bullseye (10 rnds, 3/8in dia) at 15 yrds with a Tasco 4x15 scope mounted on it. No recoil.
I also had to replace the trigger on the NP. The stock trigger is absolutely awful!
I will continue to work with the NP but I'm seriously looking at a Discovery PCP and a hand pump to start, and a scuba tank and fill adapter as soon as I can put the pennies together. I also plan on replacing the trigger on the Discovery as I hear they have the same trigger problems as the NP does.
BTW; the trigger was a GTX II, cost $30 + shipping and it is sweet!

Thanks for the info.
I was looking at the MAC1 web site and saw his 392 steroid rifles and they seem interesting. Does any one have info on these? |

The trigger on the Disco is actually a very nice unit once you replace the coil spring behing the trigger blade.... In addition, you can add a couple of screws to make it adjustable without even drilling holes.... It's one of my favourite triggers....

Not so much, but you may also want to look at: http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/
Under "Benjamin" and "Custom ACP" on the left hand side of the page. This is really want you want in a pumper- full power shots with minimal pumping (unit also has a better sear installed in it). |

| That is very interesting, Basically what I am looking for is max FPE. I am looking to achieve 1 shot kills on woodchuck sized animals and as they say in drag racing " Nothing beats displacement". I want to shoot big heavy pellets fast with out going into a PCP. |

That is the next question. Do I need to move up to a .25 or will a .22 do what I need? I think the .22 will do it but am open to the .25.
Cabala's and Kittery Trading Post bot have .22 NP in stock that are advertised as having around 800 FPS, but is that accurate? Will I have to do work to them to make them perform.
MAC 1 has the pumper in the same category already set up and tuned for about the same price.
I know what I am doing with powder burners, change the bullet weight and powder charge and I can do a lot of things with the same rifle, but these air guns are a whole new creature. |

I have a mac-1 modded 392. It's discovery loud
at a max charge of 14 pumps. It also puts out 25 fpe.
It's not a gun you shoot all day but even 8 pumps
gives you 16 fpe. It does good with kodiak and Eun Jin
pellets which are a heavy 21.1 and 28.4 grains.
Mine isn't scoped but I added a peep sight. |

| The Trail XL in .22 should drop just about anything a burner isn't needed for. They are super accurate guns, just pretty finicky about how they're held. I've had mine for a year now and though I get random fliers they aren't the guns fault. Every other shot goes exactly where it should, and I mean exactly |

| Thanks for all the info. I am going with the MAC1 modified 392. It will give me the power I need plus it will allow my niece and nephew to be able to pump it to start there training. |

it's more expensive, but why not go the gas piston or nitrogen piston route in a .20 thru .25?
my .20 Beeman RX1 is a 'powerhouse' (i keep it at 20-21 BAR, too...it's maxed at 24 BAR) I've taken "fair to meddlin' " sized critters (jack rabbits) at 45-60 yards with it with no problems.
i must confess that i am biased, though...i prefer Beeman or RWS springers/gas pistons. i have owned other brands but they didn't seem to satisfy me as those two.
someday...a side/under-lever gas piston may find it's way into my arsenal... |
