I'm new to this,, so please bear with me. I am planning on participating in this years Veterans Wheelchair Games,, in the airgun competition. For that reason, I purchased the above gun. I am having trouble getting it to perform at the level needed to be competitive. My question is,, is this gun capable of the needed accuracy,, or should I be looking at spending a lot more? Any advice is welcome,, ( I'll ignore what I don't like.

Probably the best advice I can give you is to purchase many different types of pellets and try them all from a bench rest until you find one that your gun likes.... Every airgun is an individual, and they all seem to like a different dance partner....
If you are target shooting at about 10m, you should be able to find a wadcutter style pellet that will works well.... and because of their design, they punch a cleaner hole in the paper, making them easier to score....
H&N and JSB both make match grade pellets of varying head diameters.... and you may well find that just a 0.01 mm difference is day and night in your gun.... When you do find something that is a tack driver, buy a ton of them and make sure they are the same lot number as what you found worked in your gun....

What, specifically are your issues?
As Bob indicated, it may just be a matter of the type/brand of pellet you are using. |

Thank you,, I will be checking the internet for different brands,, since there isn't much variety to choose from locally. Are there any that I should avoid? ( in the interest of not wasting time and money.)

| I haven't had any luck with any of the gamo's and that is what I hear from a lot of different members. I've heard a lot of good things about JSB exacts, but I personally never tried them in one of my pistols or rifles. I use crosman in mine, but since every gun I own in both .177 and .22 is a crosman (except bb guns) I'm kind of prejudiced. I had to go look to see which rifle is the challenger and I am impressed! It's a beaut! I would just keep trying, because it has to be at least as accurate as the discovery and the marauder. I know both of those leave a ragged hole at 10M because I had a disco once until I got tired of pumping. lol Anyway, AirgunsofArizona.com, if I recall correctly , had sampler packs that came with several different kinds of pellets. I don't know if they are still doing it or not. |

The rifle is designed as a target rifle; it should be capable of performing at a pretty high level. I certainly cannot suggest that you spend a lot more money on another rifle. Find out why your AG isn't functioning at the level you want/need. As others have suggested, it is most likely pellet choice that is causing accuracy problems. You simply have to shoot a variety of different pellets and see which your guns likes best. Since you are shooting targets, wadcutters are probably your best bet. There are many sources of pellets online but I will suggest that you look at Pyramyd Air (I am not affiliated with them at all). They have a *wide* range of pellets available and they are *always* fourth tin free. If you order four tins, whether different pellets or the same, the least expensive tin of the four is free. My rifles like RWS (Meiterkugeln and Hobby) and H&N (Match Rifle), although they do pretty well with Crosman Premier (Super Match). As has been mentioned, my guns don't like anything Gamo either. Bottom line, shoot as wide a variety of pellets as you can and see what works best. The upside of that, of course, is that you get to put in lots of practice before the Games. |

Thanks guys,, I've just been shooting the stuff that I ordered with my challenger. It is branded by the same company I ordered through,, "Champions Choice". It says on the tin, that it's made in Germany,, but doesn't mention the manufacturer.
One other question I have about airguns in general,, is about lubrication. I've read that oil shouldn't be used to clean and lube the barrel,, for fear of "dieselling"(sp). What do you use, then?

| You don't need anything. What you do is take a piece of weedeater line just a little bit longer than the barrel of your rifle. You melt one end with a lighter till you get a blob that is just a hair smaller than a .177 pellet. Then you sharpen the other end. You put a patch over the end of the line and pull it through the barrel with the patch, changing them till they are clean. Whatever you do, Don't EVER use a brass brush. It will ruin your barrel really quickly. But you shouldn't clean the barrel unless it's a last resort. I have never cleaned any of my rifle barrels more than every thousand shots or so, and then it took about 50 shots till it settled back down. Good luck!!! |

I agree with the "try different pellets" strategy. Every gun is a little different.
Since an airgun doesn't have the heat, pressure, or corrosion associated with burning propellants/primers, you probably don't need to clean the bore until accuracy falls off. A degreaser like 409 or Windex will work just fine. Like Oddtodd mentioned, I count on at least 20 rounds for "return to zero" after cleaning. |
