I am going to purchase a new air rifle. I want a quality gun that is capable of shooting bugs. I will hunt squirrels mostly but may pop the occaisional rabbit with it. Here are the guns I am contemplating right now. All of them in .22 cal. I am leaning heavily toward the faster RX-2 or the 460 Magnum. Will I be sacrificing accuracy by going with the faster rifle? Any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Beeman RX-2
Beeman HW97K
RWS 460 Magnum
Air Arms TX200 HC
Air Arms TX200 MkIII

those all seem like good choices. just rember a faster pellet wont help if it doesnt hit its mark. Wink kidding aside i prefer the fixed barrels to the break barrel models myself. just one less moving part to effect accuracy. i think the fact that the air gun wont reach out quite as far as your 17hmr makes it more challenging and fun to stalk up to them. plus the noise is substantially less. Cool and rememberalot of spring powered rifles will have a rise in power as they break in which will give you a bit more punch to your target. and any rifle that breaks the sound barrier has a possibility of loseing accuracy so staying around 1000 fps should get the job done. i feel confident that i can pick what part of the squirrels head i want to hit with my 97k. depending on magnification of coarse. and at the end of the day if they all work great... which do you think looks the nicest? that played a part for me at least. im big into esthetics as well as accuracy. let us know your choise and post pics. pyramydair is a pretty good source to buy from too. have fun. walt Mr. Green

If you would specify some of the models you were looking for we might even be able to help you narrow it down! And welcome aboard! Mr. Green

Sorry man, I'm blind. That was pretty stupid of me. Or did you put them there later? Shocked

Anyway, I'd roll out of that list with either one of the Air Arms rifles. Probably the HC for balance. Wink

The AA rifles are at the top of my list for their looks, accuracy rep and trigger rep. I have also looked hard at the AA Pro Sport. The only thing I have reservations on is that they are quite a bit slower than the RX-2 and the 460. I also have been looking hard at the RWS 54 in .22 cal.

No worries Walt. Whatever I get I will post some pics.
I gotta sell a Glock or two to get the rifle and scope no matter which it is.

just looked at the beeman rx2 in 25 cal. and that things seems like a beast! if your main concern is to hunt that thing looks the buisness. 24 ft lbs of energy in that caliber! that will put a serious hurting on a squirrel. Twisted Evil

I can imagine you want some more power, but power doesn't necessairily come in speed.

In my experience the 54 in .177 doesn't have that much more power over the HC. I would certainly go for the .22 in that particular model, but it won't shoot "as fast". It will probably deliver the punch better though.

I recon the 460 would be the most powerfull out of your choice but for squirrels and rabbits I recon the HC will also do, and you'll have a gun that's got a finish that's just so much more pretty to look at. Of course that may hold you back if you don't wanna scratch it. Wink

The reason I want speed is for trajectory. In my squirrel hunting evolution I went from the .22 long rifle (50-60 yds) to the .22 mag (70-80 yds) to the .17 Mach II (70-80 yds) but more accurate than the .22 mag. Then finally to the .17 HMR (100-125 yds) with squirrel eye accuracy. What I would like from an airgun is about 70 yds with squirrel eye accuracy and head shot pass through. Also I would like the rifle to weigh less than 10 pounds including scope. Am I wanting too much from a springer?

Yes.

But they do have this thing called "hold over", which normally allows one to hit a target out of their point-blank range.

I really don't see why you couldn't do that with any of the guns listed in your first post. Except the whole pass-through thing. That likely won't happen. Although, you don't need a pass-through for a kill. Most squirrels won't go anywhere with a .22 pellet in their head... except into your game bag.

Ok I decided to buy a used rifle for now. I just could not pass on the deal. It is an RWS 48 in .22 cal. with the T06 trigger. Custom textured paint and a few extras. These are the pics from the guys classified add. It will look a bit different after I get it. I will be mounting a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12 X 40 AO. This gun was not on my original list but it came highly recommended by several airgun shooters. It was also less than half the price of the guns I listed.

you will find that the bipod will damper accuracy. it will provide
overstability. spring guns need to "rock and roll' during the shot cycle.

sandbags off the bench without forward hold are best.

that one is on my wishlist btw. Very Happy
