Go a few squirrels with the .22 cal Pneuma. Centerpoint 4-16 with Benjamin HollowPoint pellets.
I got to the woods just before the sun came up. I was amazed at the noise of squirrels compared to what I had been hearing in the late afternoon. I sat down for about 5 minutes and realized I was in a bad spot. I could see 3 squirrels chasing up and down a tree about 35 yards away but there was too many limbs between me and them.
I got closer and they took off but I sat down and waited. Within a couple of minutes another showed up at about 30 yards. I shot and he came down and hit the ground with a thud ground but was still moving. He was down the side of a hill so I hoped he was just rolling. A minute later another came about the same distance and came to the ground with a thud. I decided to retrieve the two shot but could only find the latter and he was hit low in the center of his neck. Probably me holding under too much for shooting up at an angle. The other one was no where to be found. I sat down for less than a minute and spotted a male and female on a tree about 20 yards from me. As I weighed the idea of shooting while they were making squirrels, I thought about how I do enjoy eating them and shot them both. The male was taken with a clean headshot then the female who never flinched when the male let go, stayed in the same place and received the same treatment.
I heard claws on bark not far off and waited a couple of minutes and a male showed nearly at he same spot and was dropped within a few feet of the two. It began to mist a little and I figured that was it. I sat still for about 15 minutes just listening to the woods and from 50+ yards away saw 3 squirrels chasing each other and hoped they would come closer. They did and the 1st two walked the same path on a branch about 15 yards away and paused. The 1st one paused and was shot and fell. I had a pellet already in my hand ready to reload thinking the others would scatter. The second one came to the same spot and was shot in the head. The 3rd took off. It began to rain as he was running away and I decided he had a good idea. It was nice walking out with a load of squirrels

I don't know what to do except make a stew out of them.
Never cooked squirrel or rabbit. |

Yup..you can do that in pinch. The best way in my experience if you want tender dish is to soak your meat in a brine solution for 24 hours.."refrigerated of course".The salt pulls out any gamey taste in the meat. The older they are the gamier, and tougher the meat. Boil for one hour...simmer for an addition hour...until your meat falls off the bone..this is helpful if your making a stew.Or you can grill...with your choice of spices etc,my favorite is Woody's cook-in sauce...it's the bomb. It's how meat is done...sauces like A-1 steak sauce are complete garbage.."Limb Chicken,it's whats for dinner"........
Even my wife will eat it if prepared like this.....
I saw a fat one today that would have been a nice harvest...but due to my location, and legalities etc....had to let it go. |

i agree the area i live is filled with big fat ones everywhere! if my new toy was broken in with my good rings id be dropping them like a bad habit. my property has 4 giant oak trees that are a magnet for the tree rats. im lucky my wife hates them so i get the green light to sniper them at any time. i dont know if i could get her to eat one though. i think it would be a stretch. come spring time when my rifle is broken in and zeroed its curtains for the suckers! nothings more fun than relaxing with a nice target shooting session and all the sudden you get a squirrel making his way into the kill zone. love it. |

| I gotta get into this squirreling with the pellet gun. Not much challenge with the 17 HMR. It is fun shooting the little hairy buggers from a hundred yards away though. We get a limit (10) pretty much every time we go in about an hour with the rimfires. |

I use a cast iron skilllet with a thin coating of olive oil in the bottom.
1) layer the bottom of the skillet with sweet potatoes cut into 3/8" ish slices.
2) sprinkle the outside of the squirrels with garlic and cayenne pepper
3) stuff the inside with a tablespoon or so of onion/peppers and place them on their backs in the skillet
4) pour about a body cavities worth of welches grape juice into the squirrel.
5) tightly seal the skillet with a lid and foil around the edges.
6) I have cooked them anywhere from 5 to 7 hours (depending when I get them in the skillet at night. I cook them at 235 deg f.
The meat will fall off young and old squirrel alike. |

Personally, I like to shoot 'em, stick 'em in a Wal-mart bag and then throw 'em in the trash can.
As a variation to this recipe, I can forgo the Wal-mart bag if I don't have an extra one around. |
