Hey everyone,
I'm a total newb looking for some advice. I am interesed in buying a pcp rifle for hunting and target shooting. I first became aware of them from a review of the airforce condor in a popular gun magazine, and it seems like an excellent rifle. However, I would prefer a repeater, especially a semi-automatic. It seems to me that the .22 pellet should be suitable for most tasks, plus it's very available and inexpensive. I am intriuged by the larger caliber rifles though! I know that the quality guns aren't cheap, so price isn't too much of an issue. So I was hoping you all could give me advice on some models to look into. I also wondered if there are any websites or magazines dedicated to airgun reveiws?

Semi-Automatic?

FX Revolution or FX Monsoon. That's the only choice in Semi-Auto. Literally.

The multi-shot rifles are more widely available though. Air Arms S410 is pretty much the best rifle money can buy in my opinion.

First off welcome to the forum. There is a lot of useful information here by some very knowledgeable people (I'm not one of them)

Before an airgun can be suggested we need to know a little bit more information.

1. What is your price range?
2. What size animals are you looking to hunt?
3. Is noise an issue, do you need a shrouded barrel?
4. Also the location you will be using said airgun. Laws are very different depending where you are. your profile seems to be lacking some info.

Of course everyone has their favorite gun to recommend. I would say a Marauder in .25cal or .22 but thats just me and probably Sniper, who will chime in when he sees this post.[/url]

Are you aware that the cost of a PCP airgun could be just half of the cost of using one? There are some people that have found good deals on their equipment and reduced that (I think one person on the forum even got close to getting their equipment for the price of a hand pump) and there some that work with a hand pump and again reduced the cost but many people pay as much for the equipment as they do for a good Benjamin PCP. This is what keeps me from going PCP.

PCP's are great,but as the others said be ready to drop some coin.Especially if your new to the sport.I was fortunate to get started with PCP's for around $300,and that is CHEAP.I got a great deal on a "New" Benjamin Discovery,and hand pump for $269.00 out the door.The gun came in .177 cal so I'm assuming that had something to do with the price break.However I did a .22 cal conversion,since I shoot both.Easy to do,and cheap at around $20 for the parts.

However,take into consideration that I had other stuff etc.such as a scope from another gun to complete the package.If your new this adds to the bill.Be prepared for spending at least $600-$1000 to get started."That is baseline".Semi auto's like the FX line...your looking at $2 grand.....

Pumping by hand doesn't really bother me,as the Disco is a 2000psi fill.Be warned though if you get a gun that's set up for 3000psi,be prepared to put in some work topping it off.After 2000 psi pumping by hand gets harder.That being said I agree it's way better to get a tank set up...but again... up goes your bill.

You mention the Airforce Condor. I have one, and love it. But a few things that you should be aware of if you buy one.
It is very accurate when setup. (this can take some time)
It will usually shoot several brands of pellets nicely, but most of them seem to favor one or two specific pellets for the best repeatable accuracy. (which pellet will vary from rifle to rifle)
You can change the barrel, available stock in .177 & .22. 25 cal barrels are availble for several tuners.
Shrouds are available from several sources, makes for a quiter rifle suitable for backyard target shooting.

If you like to tinker and experiment this is a great patform to work from.

But bottle fill usually range in the 2500 to 3000 range and a secondary fill tank makes a lot of sense.

The AR6 is a double-action, though. Not a true semi-auto.

It can be worked single-action though, correct?

Hey guys,
thanks for the informative responses, I appreciate all the advice! I'll try to clarify my parameters for you. Semi-auto/repeter is preferable to me, however, if a single shot is truly a superior gun I would consider it. I'm a southpaw so bolt actions are pretty much a no-no. I live in the central/upstate area of NY, so noise and space are not really an issue. I am interested in a suppressor/silencer though since they are legal on airguns in NY. The game I intend to hunt ranges from woodchucks to squirrels and starlings. Large game hunting with ariguns is prohibited in NY as far as I know. Basically, if the rifle can't dispatch a groundhog at 50yards, I'm not interesed. On the subject of cost, I was pretty aware of the expense, and was hoping to get the whole set up (rifle, scope, pump) for around $2,000. I thought over time the savings in ammo would make up some of the initial purchase cost, but that might be wishfull thinking. Again, thanks everyone for the great advice! It's great to be able to pick the brains of such knowledgeable people before jumping in with both feet.

For 2000 bucks you're best of buying a lefty S410 Xtra FAC in .22 with a decent powerfull scope. They should be available and don't worry about bolts on the right side, you can operate them, with your other right hand and if you learn to use it good, you can become a lot quicker too.

Also get a diving tank with it, or maybe two, a small one and a big one. Get them at 300 bar but be carefull not to fill your rifle over 190. Air Arms rifles have sweetspots between 190 and 150 bar. ]

Then you'll still have money left for an FX Revolution or an FX Monsoon which are true gas operated Semi-Automatics.

Spending more then a 1000 bucks on a full airgun set is just giving cash away.
