Hey guys, new guy here. At the age of 31, I have bought my first "springer". It's a Crosman Phantom 1000 and I like the gun a lot but am having problems with the factory open sights.
From the factory, the gun was shooting about 12" low at 13 yards. I spun the thumb wheel in the "U" direction till it was JUUUST ABOUT RIGHT. One more click, fired the gun and BOING, there goes the rear sight. It is a spring loaded little sucker that is held together by screw attached to a thumb wheel.
I found the thumb wheel but the spring went somewhere in the leaves, never to be seen again. I called Crosman and recieved EXCELENT customer service and a new rear sight assembly was mailed to me at no cost.
I put the sight back together with a new spring but was still having the same problems. Yesterday, a friend of mine came over and I asked him to shoot the gun as well. It also shot low for him, so it's not something I am doing wrong. (or at least I don't think so)
I sent Crosman an e-mail last night about my problem and they said it was the first they had heard of it. Said I could ship it back to them or take it back to the retailer.
Today I went out to fine tune the gun and see if I could get the rear sight up enough to hit my target and BOING, there goes the spring and thumb wheel again Never to be seen again.
Now after loosing my second spring I am not sure what to do with the gun.
I would like to take it back to Wal-mart and exchange it for another phantom but they have quit carrying that model.
I could send it back to Crosman.
I could get a hardware store spring and make a longer screw/thumb wheel.
Or, I could buy a scope for it. My only worry is that if the gun really is throwing pellets low (not a sight problem) the scope might run out of adjustment just like the open sights did.
Any ideas? Anyone had this problem before?
Thanks,
Clint |

| Are you sure you're aligning up the front/rear sights as it's pictured in the owner's manual???(...just a thought) |

It didn't tell me how to aim the gun in the manual
Aligne front blade level with rear sights, place target on tip of front blade. |

| Seems like an odd problem- have you checked to see if the barrel is warped/bent? |

Is there a special procedure for this? I looked through it a couple of times after the initial cleaning. Didn't notice anyting out of the ordinary.
When I got the gun, the package was broken open at the barrel tip but it has a cool plastic piece that covers the crown. I doubt it is damaged. |

| I would check and see if another Walmart has one in stock and exchange it or return it and get a different model. |

Could definitely be a problem with your specific gun. Hard to say without shooting it.
I do know that with a springer, you have to shoot about 100 pellets through it (perhaps more) before you truly try to adjust the sights. They have a "settle in" period.
My Crosman G1 (same basic gun as your Phantom, but it came scoped) had pellets flying all over the place. Then, at about 75 pellets, it began to settle down and shoot straight. Now, with several hundred pellets through it, I can place my shots in small groups at 25 yards with the gun on a rest.
I would return the gun to Wally World and exchange it for a different gun, even if it's not the Phantom. Walmart carries several brands and models and will probably have another one that fits your needs.
I recommend going with one that comes with a scope. Typically, they carry the Crosman Quest 1000 with a scope for about $100. That is the same basic gun as your Phantom, but with a wood stock and scope.

| Have you tried taking the stock off and tightening the pivot bolt? These things have a tendency to work loose, or not be tightened enough in the first place. |

If *everything* else checked out OK, and I wanted to stay with iron sights, I would move the rear sight to mid-point in adjustment, then start lowering the front sight a little at a time (with a file) until things were about right, then fine adjust with the rear sight. A lot easier than trying to extend the adjustment range of the rear sight, but it is rather permanent, so check everything else first.
I'm too old to use iron sights effectively anymore, so I'd put a scope on it. You can shim the scope for a few inches of adjustment, or there are adjustable mounts available. I don't know just how much adjustment they have, but the pictures I've seen look like it's considerable. Might have to check with the vendor. |

I'm betting that you have a bent barrel. It's actually a common problem with this style springer... it's actually called barrel droop.

has nothing to do with a bent barrel.... It means that the barrel does not line up parallel to the main compression tube.... Since open sights are located on the barrel, this has NOTHING to do with sighting errors such as you would find when using a scope (which is mounted on the compression tube) on a rifle with barrel droop....
You can check if the barrel is bent with a straight edge placed against the top or bottom surface of the barrel.... To produce the effect you are stating the bend would be OBVIOUS....

Because the OP gets tight groups of 3 followed by 2 with low POI, my guess would be breach lock-up problems which was very common on early Phantoms. Perhaps this is a new old stock Phantom.... and has such issues. Best bet is to return it to Wally for a credit or refund at no cost or send it to Crosman for replacement which costs shipping. I had a similar breach lockup problem with my Benji Classic with the same basic power plant as the Phantom. I had no option but to return it to Crosman (Gravels in Quebec). They replaced it with a new rifle with a very positive lockup and it's is very consistent at 25yards, with a modified 2-stage trigger based on the GRT III I get tight groups using JSB Express RS which are almost as good as my HW97. These rifles can be accurate for sure.
Check your lockup if you can, I was able to show I had a problem because just the weight of the barrel was enough to break open the breach if I plopped the fore-stock on anything... I had a clear case of "loose lockup". If I rested the barrel on sandbags, it shot straight and true because the breach was forced shut tight. Anyhow, don't waste time with a dud, get it set right. |

This shouldn't be an issue with open sights either, as once again, the sights are mounted on the barrel.... I too had a Phantom which suffered from an inconsistent barrel lock up.... but it shot perfectly with the original sights.... It was only when a scope was fitted that the lock up problem became obvious....
Having said that.... if the barrel lock up is OBVIOUSY loose, and the barrel doesn't close properly sometimes, then two possibilities exist:
1. The breech is venting air during the shot (ie leaking) causing a low velocity shot and the lower POI....
2. The barrel is "jumping" during the shot which would cause the shots to string vertically on the target....
In either case, unless you can identify that the spring loaded breech latch is not functioning properly (may just require lubrication).... you would be better off returning the gun in exchange for one that works.... It would help your case considerably if you could demonstrate that the barrel doesn't return to the same location each time you close it.... or was loose and wobbled around when closed....
