I appologize for my ignorance, but this is all new to me and I'm trying to understand so that I can become a better more consistent shot with my Gamo Big Cat 1200 .177 that I just bought.
I'd like to know what I should be thinking when I'm selecting pellets and selecting targets to fire at be it squirrels, rabbits, cans, or paper.
Are there resources that can instruct me on what is relevent to know and understand?
For those of you who have the patience to help out a neophyte who is very interested in learning more about this fine hobby and will take the time to read each response carefully I thank you very much.

FPE means Foot Pounds of energy.... It is the velocity in feet per second squared times the pellet weight in grains divided by 450,240....
FPE= V^2 x W / 450240
It is a much better indication of the power of a gun (of any type) than the velocity (which is only part of the equation).... Typically, a given gun will produce a bit more energy in a larger caliber.... eg. a .22 "Brand XYZ" will usually have a bit more power than the same gun in .177.... even though the velocity is lower....
More powerful guns will typically produce a bit more FPE when using heavier pellets.... although there is usually an optimum weight for a given gun.... Trying to drive any pellet over about 900 fps is, IMO, a waste of time.... they lose so much of their energy in the first few yards it just isn't worth it....

Hi there!! WELCOME to the madness  I understand completely..I was the same when I first found this place....I recommend you go to the "RIFLE" section and start reading...and reading....and reading. Also, if asomething is on your mind, you can use the "SEARCH" feature to help you get to that specific subject..I think you'll find that as you learn you'll come to understand how much more there is to learn!! (if that makes any sense) .....
This forum has members from all around the world, literally !!! That gives us all a much broader knowledge base to learn from..you might also do a "google" for any particular subject/question you want more info about. The internet is a marvelous thing..again-WELCOME to all this, hope you find it to your liking ! |
