I picked up my first air rifle, a Gamo Big Cat .177. I took it to have the velocity checked at the local Air Rifle repair shop and while using Exact Pellets it averaged in the 880s. I can't remember the weight of the pellet.
I know they advertise 1000 with lead and 1200 with alloy, but that is well known to be hype.
I just want to know if 880 is a good average baseline for the big cat or do I need to return it for another one.

JSB Exacts are a pretty heavy pellet at 8.4 grains, so I would think your fps is quite reasonable.
The experts here can provide more info though. |

I'm glad you brought this up, I just got the same exact rifle from Dicks Sporting Goods in Orland Park. I was plesantly surprised to find that this one has the metal trigger on it- so an after market trigger is possible if I opt to do so.
Any experiencees or stories from other members would be appreciated! |

Well, I can say this much...I got one with the plastic trigger, but the thing shoots VERY tight groups. When the velocity was checked they used Exact express pellets that are 7.9. grams. Here are my test results: (maybe someone can explain what all this means)
HIGH: 890.3
LOW : 884.2
SD: 3.1
CV: 0.35%
MAD: 2.3
ES: 0.26%
AV: 886.8 FPS
ES: 6.1 FPS
I thought about returning the gun and looking for a metal trigger Big Cat, but the thing shoots so well....I decided to keep it. I did upgrade the scope to a Beeman 3-9x32. |

Any idea what the maximum effective range should be for the Kodiak's that are over 10 grains? I believe I've read it here known as the "sweet spot" that the pellet packs the most wallop.
I've been shooting my pellets at targets about 50 to 60 feet out and it's very accurate, but something tells me that I've got a great deal of distance to go further out.
Thoughts? Ideas? Tips? Sugguestions? All would be welcome and appreciated.

"HIGH" and "LOW" are the maximum and minimum for the group that was tested. "ES" is the extreme spread between the high and low values. "AV" is the average for all the shots tested, and "SD" is the standard deviation (SD is a measure of how close the actual values were to the average.) Others here will know the rest.
Forget the manufacturer's inflated claims about what the gun should do; look at what it actually does. You have 14 FPE at the muzzle, and the gun is accurate. That allows lots of hunting and plinking options. If you're having fun with it then all is right with the world.

I shoot at toothpicks at 10 yards, pop bottles at 50, and coffee cans at 100 (but not all with the same gun). Your gun will take 800-1000 rounds to break-in, during which time your pellet choices and shooting technique will become more refined. Keep on shooting, get to know the gun, and I'm sure 30 yards won't be the limit. |

| Actually broom, I modified mine with a steel brake that weighed 6 oz and it didn't help much. My shake is medication realted. It's called tardive diskenisia. |
