Ran into a group of Grouse while out today at just over 4000 ft.... Dropped the first 2 and when my wife went over the bank to get them she flushed another.... It flew across the road and I went after it.... dropped it as well.... One head shot each from my 2260 PCP Carbine....

The two on the left are Franklins Grouse (a subspecies of Spruce Grouse) and the one on the right is an young Ruffed (Willow) Grouse.... Strange they were all hanging around together.... Shocked

Bob

Otherwise, nice shooting glad ya got "something for the pot ".

Gorgeous day today.... saw a total of 7 Ruffed (Willow) Grouse, 4 in one flock.... got one of the 4 and the others flew.... The first shot was at about 40 yards and I saw a puff of feathers and he ran.... I got closer for the followup (head).... and found the first shot broke a wing.... The other two were clean head shots....

The two on the left are grey morph and the one on the right is a red morph.... I don't think there is a more beautiful Grouse than a red Ruffie.... When I cleaned them I noticed that even the meat is a slightly different colour.... They are all the typical light coloured breast meat.... but the meat on the red morph has a slight orange cast to it....

BTW, packrat.... the 4000' was the altitude.... We find mostly Franklin's and Dusky (Blue) Grouse above that and Ruffed Grouse below that....

Looking back at the photos.... I think maybe the right hand Grouse in the original post in this thread is a hybrid Franklin's X Ruffed Grouse.... While the colour is very similar to the red morph Ruffie I just posted.... the markings on the tail coverlets are totally different (same pattern as the Franklin's).... plus the tips of the tail feathers are white like a Franklin's.... The meat was light coloured like a Ruffie but now that I look at the photos side by side.... I think that red one in the first post is a cross-breed.... I wonder if they were all from one family.... make sense since I shot them all at the same time....

Weird.... Shocked

I know Bob, I realized that after I re-read it, but at first read it did strike me in a different light...was just goofing around Mr. Green

So, since I don't think I've seen any grouse 'round here....can you give an idea of their size?? Nothing else in photo so I have no reference....are they about the size of a pigeon? don't laugh, it's just that I've never seen one....have never hunted any type bird ever!!

Franklin's (Spruce) Grouse are about pigeon sized ( 8 oz.).... Ruffed (Willow) Grouse weigh about a pound (maybe the size of a bantam hen).... Blue Grouse weigh 2-2.25 lbs.... so the size of a small chicken....

The breast (both halves) of a Ruffed Grouse is a decent meal.... and VERY tasty....

Upon further research I have realized that the red bird in the first photo of the Franklin's Grouse is a female and that the grey ones are males.... Rolling Eyes

Me bad.... I had no idea they were that different.... I wonder why the meat on the female was so much paler?.... One would think that a single flock would be eating the same things....

Hey there Bob...if you look at many species of bird or other animal for that matter, the female is darker in color. This is to insure that the female, can blend in better with the surroundings, and be able to tend to the young. The males have the "flash"in order to attract the female. In your reference to the pale color of the meat in the female...my theory is this, and you can take it with a grain of salt...............It may be stress hormone"s,more blood flow etc. that make the male meat darker in color, and stronger in taste.Look at Veal for instance. The meat is so tender due to caging the animal where it can't really move at all.

My point is this...in the wild the male fights, and the female protects the nest, therefore possibly less active? It could also explain why the male life span can be shorter in the male species including humans?...Just a thought... Neutral
