mines a Seig 7x14....
but the 7x12 & 7x14 of most makes
are made by Seig...just re-branded...
They are a good lathe but its the veriable speed
that lets them down...As the speed comes down so
dose the power output of the motor...& it normaly
at low speed you need the power...ie..big drills etc..
I have tossed all the electronics & the DC motor in
the bin.....put a shaft where the motor was so I
can drive a 1hp 220volt 4 pole 1400rpm on to the
shaft..And a 220volt Rheostat to control rpms..but
have geared it so the motor is at near its full rpm range
at the normal cut speeds...
Mate buy a lathe with a gearbox...
You will be alot happyer in the long run... |

| ? You have no gearbox? The electronics were just varying the motor speed or something? |

Basicly no gear box...just a hi/lo box that gives 2:1 & amost 1:1
Other than that speed is adjusted by verying motor rpms
on the silly little 350w 220v DC motor & has a max rpm of 6000..
the chuck has a max speed of 3000rpm so it has a total drive
reduction of around 2:1 or 4:1..3000 rpm hi ratio or 1200 rpm low ratio anything ealse is done by motor revs... |
