bad thing about a springer is that they kick a bunch when you have a higher powered one right?
so i got to thinking about the boxer(opposing piston) engines and came to the conclusion that there might be a area open for a design like that in air rifle.
a normal springer has the piston and spring inline with the barrel (generally one piston). although it would increase the weight of the gun why not add another piston traveling the opposite direction? it should cancel out the first piston if they are the same size and weight. also with the addition of another spring you could decrease the piston size slightly and use the same spring because you will have another piston to get the quantity of air needed. doing so would increase the overall pressure meaning more power, right?
now while that is nice, what would happen if we had 4 or more pistons perpendicular to the barrel? although it would take some fine tuning to get them all to release at the exact same time it should theoretically provide for a powerful and accurate gun right?
and yes you would loose a little power though friction and channeling of the air but i still think you could overcome that and have a more powerful gun.

Its been done...its called a "Wisecombe" they are a hand made springer
from England....
Al may know a bit more about them 
There is a vid somewhere on the net....

how about a rifle that has the pistons perpendicular to the bore?
(it would allow for more than two, but look very odd) |
