Problem is, there isn't enough left of the head and neck for a sure verification. A .22 has that problem sometimes. The male has a definite round black patch on the upper chest which is unmistakable compared to other species. The female is more difficult to identify and is easy to confuse with the female house finch. The female house finch has some diagonal striping on the chest and sides that is easy to recognize after awhile. I took a photo of a male a couple of days ago that I'll try to post or pm to you if you want (tomorrow when time allows). If you want to lure house sparrows, it's easy to do so by putting up a small wood nesting box with a 1 1/2" hole drilled for an entrance. I build them out of wood scraps and secure them to a t-post as lures to attract them. If you put a perch dowel rod about 1" below the entrance hole, they will sit there checking out the house, and calling for a mate. The interior of the floor of the box needs to be about 3 1/2" or 4" square, and the height about 8 inches with the entrance hole toward the top.   Posted: Tue Jul 06, 2010 1:12 pm Witchdoctor Member Joined: 19 Dec 2009 Posts: 16 I was hunting some norway rats in my backyard, but I'm currently facing some stiff compitition from the starlings and doves that are chasing and pecking the rats around in the bushes at the bottom of my yard.
