Fpe notable difference?

I'm shooting rats with a BB pistol and i've been considering a sronger gun because this one isn't dropping them reliably most of the time. Problem is i have so many requirements including and especially noise (noise has eliminated many models including the otherwise great choice of the 2240) that make finding one that fits the bill near impossible. The only ones that do fit the bill don't have near the velocity as my BB. So i'm using a calculator to try and determine which guns will have more by comparing heavier pellets to bb's in the calculator with thier respective velocities. But i am unsure as to how much will be enough to make a difference enough to warrant buying. Mine develops 2.6 FPE. give me a number you think would be enough to make a marked difference in how quickly they drop.

Also, i am estimating pellet velocity by looking at the gun's spec and guessing as to how much velocity it will lose with heavier pellets. obviously not the most reliable way, but do you know of a calculator that will show velocity loss/gain with various size pellets?

Try the 4fpe range. And place your shots better.

Ok, well how about a calculator that calculates change in velocity given various pellet weights? From the FPE calculator i found to get 4 FPE i'm probably not going to maintain enough velocity with the pellet weights it takes to do that with the velocities the guns i have to choose from develop. But i can't be sure because if i choose a very heavy pellet i have to be able to calculate how much velocity the gun i consider has with typical pellets. So i can't find a gun to get me 4 FPE w/o a calculator like that. does one exist?

AFAIK your calculator is a pipe dream.

If noise is a primary concern, check out TKO's website. His muzzle breaks are the cats meow. They can make a stock 2240 sound like almost nothing, I believe I've read some one referring to it as "mouse fart quiet".

The TKO muzzle break has been suggested. One of DR's other requirements was a repeater. This could all be done, by taking a 2240, adding the muzzle break, there's a indexing multi shot accessory, but you would also need a high rise scope mounts and scope in order to use that. All in all you've gone from an inexpensive $50 pistol to a semi modifided $175 one.

Agreed, but you know how the Crosman addicts are, we can't help it, it won't stop, we need to modify them! Mr. Green

Sorry just had too. I now have 7 Crosman's, and I'm seriously considering another build, and maybe an MROD.

yes, and the muzzle brake alone is almost as much as the pistols i was considering and more than at least one of them. thing is, most here are looking at me as another air gun enthusiast, but actually i'm just trying to get rid of some rats quietly and cheaply, which is starting to look impossible at this point. I'd already have bought one but the 2 that looked to be possibilities so fareach have one fatal flaw. The p17 i thought would fill the bill but it looks like the power isn't going to be much more than my C11, tho if i could see what the velocity would drop to with heavy pellets i may be able to determine it would work. But with no calculator i can't figure it. by the way, i WILL consider a single shot if it will mount a laser, be quiet enough, and have a one shot kill ability. Hence the p17....if only it could muster 400 FPS with a 10 grain pellet. Then i think it would be suitable.

DeadRats, now I understand your dilemma fully.

However, I personally see your goals a bit far-fetched for the price point.

maybe so, but mainly because of the noise. I HAVE found at least one that fit the bill perfectly except one thing.....no laser mount. The P17 has that tho, and i just figured if i could calculate velocity for a given pellet weight i could determine if the P17 would have the potential of close to the 4 FPE you said would probably be enough to make a difference over my current gun. Of course as weight goes up, velocity goes down. But w/o a calculator like that i cannot tell if it's linear or if at some point it would give a Max FPE for a given pellet weight. If it was close to 4, then at $35 for the p17 i'd be in business, as it has mounting and is said to be a pretty quiet gun. What i REALLY wanted tho was the daisy 617x, but i decided it may not be wise to buy one assuming i could find a way to make a laser mount only to screw it up or end up with a mount thats not stable etc etc.

Any gun will have an optimum pellet weight.... Generally, the less powerful the gun the lighter the pellet that will give the maximum FPE.... but not always.... There is no simple answer, hence no calculator....

I would seriously doubt if any gun shooting less than 10 FPE will deliver more energy with heavy pellets than standard weight ones....

Too many variables, both in how different pellets react to a particular gun design, and also how one gun compares to others of the same model. I would guess the relationship won't be linear. Anecdotal data, reviews, and manufacturer/vendor claims can give you a ballpark idea of performance, at least good enough to decide if a particular gun is up to the task you intend.

Hummm, just a thought.....do pellets with hollow points create better FPE than the calculator says since it only takes into account weight? Or if not better FPE, more damage to any notable degree?

Hollow points do NOT expand in soft tissue at 4 FPE.... probably not enough to make a difference even at 10 FPE....

I agree, but expanding was not quite what i was thinking. If you enter a weight of 5.1 grains, typical BB weight, the calculator doesn't care whether it's a BB or a pellet, hollow, pointed, whatever. What i was getting at is wouldn't something like a hollow point, or even any other pellet but especially one thats not pointed, do more damage to tissue than a smooth round ball regardless of the FPE the calc tells you? I mean, no shape i can think of could do less damage than a BB, right? It's smooth, round, if it spins as it goes in it makes no difference. pellet on the other hand i would think would rip and tear tissue much more due to the sharp edges, spinning would be worse yet. Maybe a hollow point wont expand, but it seems like it would do more damage than a BB of a pointed pellet that might be less apt to spin. You guys know more than i do on this subject, but this just seems like physics that make sense. Am i wrong here or is there something to it? Do you think a pellet and BB of the same weight would both do the same damage or not?
