Hi, this is my first post here. I'm a big firearms enthusiast just now getting into air rifles after a long break between my childhood and adulthood. I've narrowed my decision down to these two rifles. I've done a lot of research on them but I'm interested in others opinions as to which of them might be a better choice and why.
I plan to get .177 to have the same caliber as my sons air rifle unless someone can convince me that .22 is the way to go for some reason.
Thanks in advance,
Turtle |

| Welcome to AirGunHome Turtle. As to opinions of those rifles I have no experience with them so I can't help there but for better information it would help if you said what you plan on doing with the guns. Example if you are planing on hunting then you will be quite limited with the .177 also if you are wanting long distance say over 60 meters then you will be hard pushed to have much in the way of accuracy with .177 and will have very little energy at that distance. One of the others can give numbers if you would like. Both of those rifles are break barrels and with you being a "big firearms enthusiast" you should know shooting a springer is not like shooting a burner. Many springers are very hold sensitive in order to be accurate. |

Thanks Donec. I'll mostly be doing plinking with my son, although there's a pesky woodchuck that frequents my yard that I would like to get rid of.
At some point scopes will be thrown on to both of our guns and zeroed in. I do like challenging myself with long range shots though, so maybe .22 is for me. Also, it's not as if I've never shot an air rifle before, it's just been awhile. I shot pellet and bb guns from age 10 to about age 15 or 16, I'm 32 now so I'm sure a lot has changed. |

Welcome to the forum.
Get the D34 in .177. At this point you're just going to be doing a lot of target shooting, and learning your way around (modern-adult) airguns. No real need to spend the extra money on .22 pellets.
EDIT: I would not suggest the use of a D34 (.177 or .22) for groundhogs. If you can, use a .22LR. A more powerful rifle is needed for them than what either caliber of D34 can provide. To avoid wasting time- the D34 will kill it, but it won't be humane. |

I live in the city, the pellet death is my only option without getting the police called. Otherwise I'd use an AK on the little turd.
Is the price difference in .177 and .22 really that great? |

Pellet cost is really not a deciding factor, for me anyway, your usually talking $2-3 difference per 500 pellets......... I have much better hunting/distance results with .22cal, generally speaking........ |

A few dollars is no big deal per tin, like I said I like to challenge myself with distance shots so .22 will probably be better for me anyway. BTW, nice profile pic, love that movie |

Thanks......Great movie for sure, one of my favorites....."We can't stop here. This is bat country."
I think you will enjoy .22cal, it just has more punch/knock down power than .177cal......and it holds up better at longer ranges and in wind because they are (obviously) heavier......
Cheers, and good luck with your purchase...... |

Compared to rimfire, or god forbid the cheapest centerfire you can find... they're almost giving the pellets away. That's one of the main attractions to the big time 'burner guys.
I've personally had better luck with the cheap .177 pellets opposed to cheap .22's. Of course I only use them for plinking.
The higher quality pellets in .177 run about 2 to 3 cents, IIRC up to 5 for .22.
Still for hunting I mostly use .22. Never had a problem with .177, though, when I place the shot properly. Either are kill a critter (such as squirrel or rabbit) just as dead, when they are within range that you can properly place the shot and have enough impact energy left. For that kind of small game, 4fpe is supposed to be enough. Most people prefer over 6fpe.
A .177 Diana 34 should be expected to produce between 13 and 15 fpe (15 being very generous) depending on the pellet. The .22 version will more likely give you 14-15.
Ask Bob (Rsterne) about the ballistic and efficiency advantages of .22 over .177. |

I'm in that camp for sure. Love shooting, don't love the ammo cost. .22lr ok for price but loud enough to exclude some areas for target shooting. The pellet rifle will allow me to shoot much more and in many more areas than I could with rim/centerfire firearms.
So that makes up my mind on .22, now I need to decide between the Avenger 1100 or the RWS 34. |

Diana 34. No other choice.
You will regret it if you purchase the other rifle... and you'll end up with the Diana anyway. Search the forum and you'll see others do the same thing. Besides that we have discussed the advantages of the Diana platform over others in the price category in many previous posts. For me at least, it's getting old explaining it out with new members (no disrespect to you or other new guys) over and over again. |

None taken, and I have noticed throughout my research that its a very widely owned pellet gun. The cheapest I can find it is for $189.99 refurbished with a scope (I would rather buy it without the scope, I like to choose my own). The only thing I have against it is I've read it has a plastic trigger, a minor issue but I hate it when a company builds a quality product then cheaps out with a plastic component. I've searched to see if there's a metal replacement trigger but haven't found any. |

I do think there is a little known maker of steel replacements.
I have NEVER had a problem with my plastic trigger blade. I actually like it when shooting in the cold.
Buy a new one. I'd recommend a 4-12x40AO Centerpoint on a 1piece mount. |

I figured that's what I'll do, I'll give the other scope to my son to use. It honestly can't be worse than what I had on my crosman when I was a kid, I swear I could only see like 2 feet diameter at 100 feet out of that POS lol |
