After about 1000 rounds through my Crossman Quest, I cracked the barrel open to clean it. After cleaning, it was cocked ( safety on ) and went outside to put a pellet in and shoot it to uncock it. When I closed the barrel, it fired, with the safety still on. Good thing I had it pointing straight up when I closed it. It's never fired when I closed the barrel before and not since. What'd I do wrong?

I doubt you did anything wrong.

Trigger sear may not have fully engaged, or worked loose whilst cleaning.

Stock trigger, or do you have the GTR/GTX replacement?

I have the custom GTX trigger. The thing is, when I shoot this gun, it has never done this, before or since. I have to believe it had to do with the cleaning somehow, but all I cleaned was the bore and a drop of oil down the pipe. I've cocked and closed the barrel hundreds of times since I installed the trigger, with no problems. What really puzzles me is, the safety was on the whole time. I verified that the safety works many times also.

You have one of the screws adjusted too far. With the aftermarket triggers, you can adjust them so far that there is virtually no "safety" at all. Pull it out a bit so you can avoid this occurring again- it must be fairly close to the "line" if this happened.

I have a couple GTX triggers, and I have had the same problem, airguneric is right you have to adjust so you have proper sear contact...........

After adjusting the triggers I always point the gun in a safe direction and try to make it go off on its own; smack butt-plate in all directions, bang your hand on the side of the stock right by the trigger, just try and give it some good vibrations/impact so you know its not going to go off on its own..........

Thanks, that's got to be it. I like that light, short pull, but I must have overdone it. I'll back it off some.

I know on my RWS 350 you can take the stock off and get a good look at the trigger...if anything is out of sorts as far as the safety is concerned it would be easy to see.

If I have any more problems I'll definately take the stock off and check everything. But like I said, it only did it that 1 time and I've shot it at least 100 times since with no problems. I am going to rough it up a little and bump it around some ( pointed in a safe direction of course ) to make sure it's safe.

Good time to point out the term "safety" for that little lever/button is a misnomer. Mechanics vary in different guns, but on most they would be better named "trigger block". Having a safety engaged does not make a gun safe. It may make handling the gun a bit safer, but the only true safety is the handler. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and you will never have a tragic accident; depend on the safety to keep you safe, and you stand a very good chance of having one of those "accidents" that make the newspapers.

JCR55, this is not meant to be pointing a finger at you personally, it is a just general rant of which your incident is a good example. The "safety" was on, and the gun fired anyway. You had the gun pointing in an appropriate direction, and no one got hurt. Case closed.

Agree 100%. I regularly handle firearms and #1 rule - ALWAYS have it pointed in a safe direction, loaded or unloaded, safety on or not. I'm an old guy and been around long enough to have heard of quite a few tragic accidents that could have been prevented by following this rule.
