so, input everyone.
i have 1 guy working for me. he's been with us 16 months.
he's been givin $2/hour in raises in the first year based
on performance. he is right at the mean CA income
with only 1 year experience in the trade...
THAT IS DAMN GOOD MONEY!
he's had paid 3-day weekends as margins permit.
cash bonuses when extra effort is seen.
he gave notice a few days ago...kinda....
he has a "job" working with a "friend" that is going to pay
"more" and last 4-5 weeks. 
then he is going to make up "his" mind if "he" wants to come back...
he understands his job won't be "held" for him (wink wink)
this guy has declined every opportunity to work a weekend.
has been quoted as saying "i don't like work that much bro'"
mind you, i only worked 60 hours this week and had almost
(almost ) a whole sunday off.
when he was asked for a letter of resignation he got the
"deer in the headlights". in CA if you willfuly quit a paying
job you do not get any unemployment benefits
(and you shouldn't) 
friday he was acting wierd around me. YA' THINK?
this guy is 39 years old. he doesn't have a pot to piss in or a window
to throw it of. mind you he drives a new car. he's taken out of state
trips twice with a week off for each in the last year.
never will work a weekend. in construction of any trade, we work
when there is work. it is what it is. love it or leave it.
ya' don't f-ing leave it and think you're coming back.
anyone who has ever owned a business or been in management
knows what i'm saying.
i'm interviewing this week. he shot himself in the foot.
when you do what you did you get what you got.
BTW. CA economy is bankrupt. there are no jobs.

Oh boy...been there done that.When I managed my old shop,I bent over backwards to try,and help a couple guys similar to your employee...eeer ex, out,and it always bit me in the a$$....finally canned one for being loaded on the job...I gave him three chances.
The other guy had a constant chip on his shoulder from the get go,and thought he was entitled to more than my other guys....even though he did less work,and often bitched about it.I asked him to work a Saturday once,and he looked at me like I was crazy.My other guys were "stand up",and would do it in a heart beat.Funny how when their last check is waiting for them,it's everyone's fault but their own...your former emp is in for a rude awakening.
Sounds like it should be a blessing to you,that he's out.When the guy doesn't really want to work,that means to me he's going to half-a$$ the job,and that could affect your business big time.
I worked for a painting Contractor briefly during the summer of 1999,and this dude I was painting with used to smoke on the job.He was a good painter,but he took forever to get sh!t done,and REALLY f--ked up keeping track of the expense account.The way I see it..hey if your going to go the herbal route,do it on your own time,but be bright eyed,and bushy tailed come 7a.m. ....Image is everything in any business,you gotta stand out,and be a cut above...especially these days. |

A little off topic but I worked with a painter that used to smoke cigs and then flip the ashes in the tray and then roll them on the wall** nice effects
anyway there are always people that will do the job with less hassles |

yes that it was and he didn't try to roll it out to make it look any better just leave the grey smudges behind, and sniper I still have his # if you need him to come out and lend a helping hand  |

I've got a few employees, and have had a few here/there in the past.
Bottom line in my more recent opinion: You just can't figure some people out. They may be stupid, they may be ignorant, they may be lazy- who's to say- and who's to care. Find someone who wants the work and forget ever trying to figure the other guy out- it's bound to be an effort in frustration. |

tell me about it. i had one guy last almost 3 years. in 2 years he almost doubled his pay. people fall short on work ethic and only care about how much they can make and when they get to go home. when my long term guy left 1-08 we went through 9 people in 12 months. i fired 2 in person.
name the reason. high on drugs. insubordination. attitude/behavior problems, smoking not working, showing up late, 30 minute-10 minute breaks, stealing my tools, sleeping on the job (no bs)
outright standing around unless i say "go to work".
it amazes me how people will lie about their experience. guys claiming
15-20 years and don't know what polyurethane is or how to set up and break down an airless. when we run ad's we get the "i want $25/hr"
sh!t. yeah when i get $50 (never).
none of these nimrods can commit to anything in their lives and follow through with it. and they wonder why they hit 40 and have nothing to show for it. whatever. i don't mind 6 day work weeks. been raised with 'em. then again, that's why i have what i have. |

Sniper, some people are just plain stupid. Get used to it. I already accept this fact in my life, and am a much happier person.
