Well, I went out this morning and put some lead downrange. I was wanting to break in the BTNP some more, learn about how to hold it, see how it would shoot, see how different pellets shot in it, and especially hope the trigger broke in more.

Well, the trigger aggravated the daylights out of me, so when I went home I swapped it out for the GRT-III. http://www.airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=5195

I learned quite a bit today. First, not all pellets are created equal. If how the pellet fits into the chamber is any indication (IS IT?), Crossman Premier Domed pellets have better consistency than Benjamin Discovery, Gamo Hunter, RWS Superdome pellets, or even Crossman Premier Hollowpoints. All of the others varied in fit from very snug to loose, but the CPD's were consistently the same.

Second, I'm a long way from figuring out how to hold a high-powered springer. Take a look at my groups (10 yards on an admittedly breezy day - at times I had to wait for the target to come back into field it was blowing so badly) and see if they tell you anything. Any help is appreciated.

Some groups weren't bad, but had a flyer:

Some groups did clustering:

Some walked the dog:

And some were just all over the place:

However, I know the rifle is capable of shooting much better. Take a look at this:

Not bad, eh? Oh, this might help:

This was a 5 shot group. The one stray was shot #5 and I knew it as soon as I squeezed the trigger - got excited about having a good group and jerked! This was with the Crossman Premier Domed 14.3 grain pellets.

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions and getting some more lead downrange next week.

THANKS!

Can't speak to the rifle but those groups look like it can perform well and that you just need to learn the rifle/hold/position to rest it/trigger, etc, as you mentioned. Were these shot offhand or off a rest??

I'm not a springer guy by nature but I have had a few. Currently a couple of Crosman Ravens for the kids but I shoot them sometimes too. And a BSA Lightning XL in .177. I'm still learning the BSA. I can print a decent 10m group off-hand but I've had a heck of time trying to shoot it off a rest at any distance. Moving the rest point even a half inch will throw the pellet somewhere crazy. I just added a bag style rest to my collection and it seems to like that much better

Improvised rest: an old throw pillow sitting atop a tackle box.

That's gonna make it tougher to get consistent results, especially as you are still getting used to the rifle. If you have more room, go out to 15 or 20y and you'll really see the effect of very small changes in rest/hold position.

My BSA replaced a Crosman NPSS. I found the gas ram to be very hold sensitive. Same off the rest. The snap of the ram is different than a spring as I'm sure you've noticed. Different may be better or worse for different people. With the NPSS people either praised it's accuracy or complained about it. Not much in between. I think this had more to do with one's shooting style than anything else.

Print a few groups offhand at 10m then shoot in the target match. You'll learn it faster if you know folks are watching Laughing
