Want to post a link to a .pdf file on my web server in a post but it doesn't work. The objective is for the user to simply click on the text and initiate a download like someone downloading a file.
Googled issue and found instructions on how to do this at http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_url.asp under Downloading with FTP, but like I stated, it doesn't work because the the URL doesn't link with the text.
Suppose I could just put the ftp link in the post directly but would rather not. Is this html coding not possible in this forum? Thanks. |

| Are you sure your hosting service allows hot links? Because that is what you are trying to do and if you post the link on a busy site it will effect your hosting service's band width and could slow their site down and even cause it to crash especially if the file is very big. |

It's your service provider as donec states.
Here's an example- a .pdf that when you click it will open:
http://www.crosman.com/pdf/manuals/crosman/2260/C2260-EVP.pdf
The reference you have found on Google indicates how to input these things on HTML webpages you are programming, but due to your service provider it does you no good unless you create your own webpage, on their server/service to put it on.
As Donec indicated, your provider is not allowing "hot linking" which means it does not allow another website to 'draw' anything or connect to it except your own webpage(s) on their servers.
If you have access to the hosting company "Control Panel"- i.e. you are paying for monthly services and you have proper "back-end" access to your websites/domains, there will be a tab in there to turn on/off hotlinking (or should be if your provider is not extremely low-end).
What is it you are trying to link (I assume this is to post here on the forum)? |

I have created my own web page and put the .pdf file in the root directory with all of the other web page files. I even figured out the actual web address of the specific file so that if you click it, an Adobe file is downloaded to the user's machine.
This issue is that the direct link URL address to the file has my name in it - http://webpages.milwpc.com/your.name/M34_Part_list.pdf - and I'd rather remain anonymous.
On the other hand, if one would simply hover their cursor over the link, the exact address with my real name would appear so maybe my point is useless. Guess I'm just trying for style points by linking text instead of just showing a plain, old URL.

It is in a post. I want to share an RWS 34 parts list but it's rather large in appearance and would take up a lot of posting space. Better that those interested - if any, just download the file. |

Yeah, good idea and didn't think of it.
But it's an Adobe file so suppose I could convert the .pdf to .jpg or .gif via some freeware program and post it to my photobucket account. Googled ".pdf to image converter" and found Neevia online doc converter http://convert.neevia.com/.
But interestingly, even in this post tried to make Neevia a clickable link (text as html) but that didn't work either.
I've noticed in some forums that that is possible, like in http://forums.pcworld.com, for instance. Note in the image below, the icon sixth from the left, "Insert link":

That posting feature enables what I'm trying to accomplish in my posting in this forum.
At day's end, there are certainly more important issues - like the good advice I get here, but still would be nice for this forum to offer "Insert link." |

That is what the "URL" button is all about here. There may be something different about that "insert link" button, but I'm not going to sign up to find out.
Wouldn't matter anyways- if you link to a specific url, it can be determined what it is, even if not obviously apparent just by looking at the link- once the image/document is display, it's origin can be determined- so the idea of "anonymity" won't work in any case.
Why not just email me the file and I will send you the url on which it is hosted to place in whatever post on this forum. |

No need, thanks. Already used Neevia online doc converter to convert .pdfs to .jpg, uploaded image files to Photobucket account, and inserted Photobucket thumbnail into post. See http://www.airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=4721&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75
If the user clicks the thumbnail, s/he's taken to all of my Photobucket images but enough anonymity is maintained. Maybe I'm just too concerned about hacking and privacy.
Would prefer how Slavia worked his images in that same thread where just the full image is displayed after clicking the thumbnail but now we're getting into Photobucket permissions and that's beyond the scope of this thread. |

Found that linked directly to http://www.postimage.org/ but ended up using hybrid HTML; thumbnail is from Photobucket but full screen link is to Postimage so user is no longer burdened by all of my Photobucket images. |

Set up an account with http://www.postimage.org/ and uploaded images without a problem but now want to delete some images I have on their server. Instructions on their site don't explain how to do this so sent question to their tech support twice without a response.
Anybody else ever get a response of out them after submitting tech support question? Their service is free and beggars can't be choosers but still... |
